This show is fun! FX are good. Some are actually quite good, but none are exceptional. There's a lot (and I mean A LOT) of CGI so it's understandable that some are mediocre; but, they get away with it, IMO, since it's a comedy. Adrianna Palicki's role is somewhat like what ayanami joked about earlier on another thread: It's like Agent Bobbi Morse changed jobs from SHIELD to Starship First officer; however, her character doesn't detract from her opposite like she did, IMO, with Hunter on SHIELD. Her opposite in this series is The Captain of the ship and Palicki's dynamic presence is better suited in this light. She adds to Seth's character instead of detracts. She's actually a perfect fit. Even though the AoS comparison has already been made, it definitely doesn't have a negative effect on how I view and enjoy the show. In fact, it may actually add to it since Palicki is doing a role I know she can crush. Her comedic timing and facial expressions are spot-on and work better here than on AoS since she's in a higher ranking role. The cast is diverse and gel well. They're fun to watch and I was immediately interested and engaged. The only potentially bland character so far is the doctor. It seems the show is wanting her to be the only stoic on a ship full of clowns. Not a good fit. I hope they let her be more expressive and bring some funny so she fits in with the rest of the cast. This show doesn't need a Spock (hell, even Spock had comedic moments). It seems to me the actor playing the doctor can bring the snark and I hope they let her. There were a few places where I thought the writing was a bit hokey. Like the were forcing the funny. That's not needed on this show as the characters (actors) bring more than enough funny with the less idiotic portions of the script and they all, for the most part, have great comedic timing. The Orville has a lot of potential and I'm moving it up on my DVR priority list as it's worthy of not getting bumped by an inferior show.

Figures, I just watched the episode, checked the tv section of the forum for a thread while I was watching, then didn't refresh the tv section before creating a thread after I finished. So here's the little writeup I did on the first episode in the thread I have now deleted:
And to address what DTM said, While there's some similarities of the personalities of Kelly Grayson and Bobbi Morse, Grayson has so far shown any indication of being a proficient hand to hand fighter. I disagree about the doctor being the only stoic. The second officer and the AI are both stoic, but like Drax in GotG have been used for humor in the form of not understanding human idioms and metaphors. The doctor seems destined for the straight man role, and if she doesn't excel at it then it must be the writing because Johnson did that sort of stuff in Castle and did it well.

Seems like my earlier impression was correct, this definitely is Bobbi and not-Hunter meets Galaxy Quest. Though I gotta agree with DoTheMath , in that her dynamic with her ex seems more balanced here, as he's the higher ranking one, not her. On AoS Bobbi had the occasional habit of putting Hunter down - and the show allowed it, despite his special forces training and everything! Here that simply doesn't happen, or at least not to that extent, as he's her boss. I have to say, though, both her character and her dynamic with her ex on the show are so similar to AoS and Bobbi/Hunter that I find it almost annoying. Case in point, the crew/team finding out about the past relationship: On The Orville: Isaac: "The Captain does not appear to be pleased of the arrival of this first officer. Why is this?" Malloy: "'Cause she's a total bitch." Alara: "You know her?" Malloy: "Oh yeah. They were married." Alara: "No way!"On AoS: Trip: "What's the deal there?" Mack: "Hunter ever tell you stories about his she-devil ex-wife?" Trip: "All the time... Damn."And what do you know, she even vouched for him with Coulson! Err... I mean Admiral Halsey. All in all, though, I rather enjoyed the pilot episode. Yeah, the special effects are kind of a mixed bag (can somebody please do something about the weird looking shuttles!), but decent enough for a comedy show that doesn't always take itself too seriously. Some of it is even really good, like the biology guy from the science station, who looked more like some weird water plant than anything. That's also one of the parts I liked most about the show so far, the creative aliens. The plant thing, the blob guy the captain ran through, the second officer who only has to pee once a year,... Plus, the characters are pretty likeable, so for now I'll definitely be sticking with the show.

Yeah, that's why I didn't include them as their stoicism is intended for comedy relief. 2.)To be clear, I'm not knocking Penny's acting ability. I actually think she's good at her craft; better than the writers have thus far allowed her to display. At this point in the show, she seems out of place, IMO. If they let the character loosen up a bit she'd be a better fit. 3.) I was only concentrating on the aspect of her joining a team where her ex is already (somewhat) established and their relationship therein. 4.) No, but she is a helluva shot. And "toilet humor" is the term I was looking for when I wrote my review, but my brain was misfiring. I hope they stay away from it as it's really not needed on this show........

The second officer (Bortus) reminds me a bit of Tuvok from Voyager - especially the part where he tells the pilot that if he can do the donkey thing then lining up the shuttle bay should be possible. And since I mentioned the pilot, his flippant attitude, tendency to show off, and past disciplinary troubles mirror Tom Paris from Voyager. And Isaac sounds somewhat similar to the voice Brent Spiner used for Data, while he name almost certainly refers to Isaac Asimov.

Yeah, I think if we start listing all the similarities and blatant rip-offs of the various Star Trek shows, we'll be here a while!

Some stand-up comedian, okay, but not a name I recognise.

I saw Seth on Late Night With Seth Meyers last week and he said they're trying for something innovative and intimated that it's going to be something different than his norm (although, people rarely travel too far from their Norm [pun intended]) I have hopes for this show and will continue watching. It's kind of a relief after the debacle that was Powerless last season.....

I missed it! 😫 Marked my calendar for the next ep, though! Jemma Simmons, they're re-airing the pilot tomorrow night at 9/8c. I thought it was okay. It's not great, but not awful. Seth is a little off-putting as a lead. I don't really know why, as I like him as the voices in Family Guy and such.

Episode 3
I'd say the show is improving. While not completely gone, the toilet humor is definitely being reduced.
Surprisingly, this episode addressed a real issue - transgender surgery of young children. I was even more surprised at the stance taken by the show - Hollywood usually sides with the LGBT crowd. For the most part it was pretty well done, though I would have liked for them to have mentioned some medical advances from the centuries between now and then.
