Episode 3 I'd say the show is improving. While not completely gone, the toilet humor is definitely being reduced. Surprisingly, this episode addressed a real issue - transgender surgery of young children. I was even more surprised at the stance taken by the show - Hollywood usually sides with the LGBT crowd. For the most part it was pretty well done, though I would have liked for them to have mentioned some medical advances from the centuries between now and then. I just finished watching the episode and actually came here to make a similar post! Yeah, the show is getting much better after the slightly wonky pilot. I already liked Sunday's episode really well, that had Alara struggling with the responsibilities of command, but yesterday's ep was another quantum leap in my opinion of the show. I was actually kinda worried at first, because of the sensitive topic, but I was quite impressed with the way they handled it. In the end there was no objective "right" or "wrong", both sides had good arguments and it was even emphasised that the captain was making an effort to consider the cultural difficulties of the situation. Sure, the final outcome was definitely shown in a certain light, but at the same time there was still value shown in both options. What annoys me a bit about the whole concept of an "all-male" race is that it's kind of nonsense. A butch appearance and a deep voice doesn't make you male by default. Sure, for humans that's most likely the case, but Bortus comes from a totally different species. In fact there are more than enough species even on earth, where the female is the bigger one. Just look at the frogfish, where the female can be up to ten times bigger than the male! If Bortus can produce a child, then he's by definition female, right? And so is the rest of his species. Just that they look more like what humans consider as male. Anyway, these are technicalities that I'm willing to forgive in a TV show, especially a comedy one. All in all, I thought that this was a great episode, and while there were still lots of jokes in the show, even in pivotal moments, this was the first time that The Orville actually attempted its hand at some good old-fashioned Star Trek story telling instead of just going for the optics. My verdict: Mission accomplished!

My verdict: Mission accomplished! I had some similar thoughts. They should have made a side trip to a planet like the one in the TNG episode 'Angel One' which was a matriarchy with the females being physically superior. The queen from Aliens was dismissed due to being too dangerous. Another thought I had was that the captain, first officer(Bobbi), second officer (Bortus), third officer (Alara), and fourth officer (the doctor was named as next in line by Alara last week) plus the two helm officers all went down to the planet. Even over a friendly planet that doesn't seem wise. As for the male producing the egg, I gave it a pass because it has science fiction history on its side - Mork from Ork produced the egg when he had a child with Mindy. While I didn't like the plotline and thought Merth was a stupid move for the show, I don't deny that it happened.

Episode 4 - If the stars should appear
An excellent episode. I was not encouraged in the first minute with the sappy relationship trouble scene, but it picked up immediately when the unknown ship was spotted. An interesting concept for a ship. If it had been actual Trek, the prime directive would have been a factor, but they don't seem to worry about that in this show (though in Trek the only problem was including a line about violating it). Some may complain about the redneck attitudes of the aliens, but if they'd been more like the Amish it wouldn't have been much of an episode. And of course, throwing in a space battle didn't hurt.

Is this the point where we consider moving this thread into the Star Trek section? Okay, kidding, but only kinda. I just watched episode four and, seriously, by the time the end credits came on, I was having tears in my eyes. Not lying! This is without a doubt the most Star Trek show that's been on the air in fifteen years, ever since Voyager wrapped up. (Yup, stepping right over you, Enterprise, while throwing uncertain side glances at Discovery.) This episode was so amazing - and dark! Good thing Bobbi Kelly has a high threshold for torture, after all her experience with Ward. Damn, she must have been having flashbacks! I know I did. Still not quite decided if the similarities of Kelly Grayson and Bobbi Morse are pretty cool or more annoying. For this episode I'm going with "cool", though. Favourite line of the ep: "The last time I saw them, one of them was banging your mom and the other one was high-fiving him." I am 100% sold on The Orville by now and the only "complaint" I have left is, that the advertising (and sort of the pilot episode) has been wildly misleading. This show is much more mature than the initial premise leads you to believe. Oh, and I thought the first scene with Bortus and his mate was hilarious! EDIT: Also, holy crap! Are we gonna talk about that cameo?!?

I had the same thought about moving to the ST section and went a step further in thinking it should be a folder so we can create threads for the individual episodes. Definitely some personality similarities with Kelly and Bobbi, though Bobbi would have cleaned the floor with those government guys before getting injected with the pain serum, I thought for sure she'd start putting up a fight after Alara was shot, but no such luck. I'll give an honorable mention to, "Aside from shooting your dad, we don't mean your family any harm." And yes, I had to do some double checking online because I couldn't believe they got Liam. I bet he spent 1-2 hours in makeup for his 70 seconds on screen.

Didn't expect the "A-Listers" as guest stars, either (Did you see who's on next week? DAUM !!!!) Moving it up my DVR Priority list......

Hari Seldon ayanamiBeen thinking about it and I don't think The Orville should be in the Star Trek area, but it does deserve a sub-board in the TV area. Agree? Disagree? You have my vote. Majority rules. Whichever yall decide, I'm tagging Jemma Simmons so she's aware of our demands request.

It might copy ST, and quite successfully, but it's still not part of the same universe. That's what matters. I agree on the sub-board, though. That would be nice. (How crazy is that even?! Would anyone of us have thought after the pilot that there'd be serious demand for an Orville sub-board?!?)

No. I didn't expect to be su-board worthy after the pilot. I'm pleased to be pleasantly surprised.

If the demand for the sub-board had been foreseen, I doubt the subject line would include, "Pilot Review". Speaking of being a part of Star Trek, I've seen rumors that both Patrick Stewart and Scott Bakula will have guest appearances this season on The Orville, though no solid confirmation. However, Seth has actually said Frakes will be directing an episode.
