The most beautiful voice I ever heard belonged to Karen Carpenter. We lost that girl way too soon.

Perhaps the second most beautiful voice I've heard belongs to the exquisitely beautiful Enya. One thing that blows my mind is that on every one of her albums I've bought were the words "All instruments and voices: Enya." That is one talented lady.

I get goose bumps listening to this one. So much feeling poured into a beautiful song.

I was quite partial Sarah McLachlan, though I soured a bit when she started releasing discs that knowingly had malware on them.
Tara MacLean has a great voice, but unfortunately hasn't put an album out in almost a decade.

bigvanray , this reply may well belong in the guitarist thread instead of this one, but I put it here for reasons apparent in just a moment. I've been playing guitar since I was 5 yrs old, literally 55 years now, and you just allowed me to find the answer to a 45 yr old question! Although I have experimented with hundreds of different combinations of guitar/amp/stomp box/digital effects processors, one of the most amazing, unique guitar tones I have ever heard, to this day, is from the Carpenter's song, 'Goodbye to Love'. It simultaneously sounds like a fuzz guitar, a kazoo, and at some points even a saxophone. (especially the days when I heard it on A.M. radio, hehe! oh the youth these days don't realize how good they have it! I won't even get into the whole black-and-white TV thing!)And thanks to the liner notes on the video I just hunted up, I FINALLY know the name of the guitarist that pulled that off...and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thought that it was so amazing! Not to take away from Karen's beautiful voice, of course, she was amazing! But now I know a guy named Tony Patuso was responsible for that. I'll be looking up his bio and history, for sure! And of course there are many other unique guitar tones out there as well, the only one that pops into my head at the moment though is Dire Strait's 'Money for Nothing'. I have never found the right combo of equipment and effects to re-create either of those sounds.

It's how I found out who played the piano in "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
One of the things that's often overlooked about the Carpenters' success is how much Richard contributed to it. He had a knack for arranging and packaging their songs in a way that showcased Karen's talent. She recorded one solo album without his involement and the record company was so unimpressed they wouldn't even release it. There was more to Richard than just a good piano player who was lucky enough to be Karen Carpenter's brother.

totally agree. Richard was a premier arranger! And don't tease us, who played that piano?! Richard was reluctant to start doing the arranging. Herb Alpert, as Vice President of A&M Records, had to push him into it.
Larry Knechtel played the piano in Bridge Over Troubled Water. I had to look it up again. I posted that song in the Piano Players thread because of his excellent work.

There are enough wonderful singers out there to fill probably hundreds of pages here, but if I want to name just one, it's gonna have to be Eva Cassidy. Truly the voice of an angel! Sadly she was lost to the world before she ever had her big break and I think most people, like me, only heard of her after she had already passed. If we're talking about vocalists, I think actual opera singers shouldn't be missing from the list. So here one performance of the wonderful Anna Netrebko:

I have never heard of her. That is truly an amazing voice. What a shame the world lost her so early on!

She had a captivating voice, for sure. Love many of their songs. I think Bless the beasts and the Children is one of her best. Thanks for reminding me of her. Time to dif out that Greatest Hits disk again....
