And not strictly pop, but one of the greatest female vocalists of all time ~~was~~ is Julie Andrews. Between Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, she pretty much owned the charts in the 60's. (Sound of Music was in the Billboard top 10 for 2 years, the top 200 for 5 years, and Mary Poppins was the best selling album of 1965. That's saying something considering The Beatles were at their height...)
