Marvel introduction. Red Marvel logo fades to grey.
All right. This is probably my favorite ep so far this season. Agents of Noir. From the music, to Coulson's voice overs, to the costumes, to the cinematic style (not to mention the episode was in B&W), this was pure 50's film noir. Well, except for the Chronicoms and the Zephyr, but I digress...
Last week's 1955 was primarily about the Chronicoms attempting to destroy SHIELD, this week's was the consequence of 1931 and the rise of Hydra. And I maintain that Malick is a dick. The only reason he didn't kill Deke, was because Malick had to repay a debt.
New title card. Straight out of the old detective/private eye movies, lol, complete with a body...
So the entire episode is told from Coulson's POV. The EMP has affected some of Coulson, like his eyesight, where he's lost the ability to see color, so the episode is in Black and White. The entire episode looked great! I found it interesting that after several minutes into each segment, I forgot the picture was in black and white until I was jarred out of it when a color commercial came on. Also due to the EMP, were the voices in his head, which was the narration of events Coulson overlays the episode. Nicely done.
Newspaper: Clark County (something), July 22, 1955. Groom lake is North of Clark County, but if you've ever been in the area, there's literally nothing there, so your closest newspaper would be out of Las Vegas (which is in Clark County). However, there is no newspaper that starts with "Clark County", so I assume it's a nod to Gregg... (There is a Clark County Courier, but it's in South Dakota.)
Enoch gets stiffed again, only being used as a glorified telephone operator, and doesn't even get to hitch a ride to 1973. I wonder if he'll still be a bartender after 42 years, or will he go with Koenig into SHIELD. The Crazy Canoe, lol. He probably had to stay there since it was the only way for the team to contact him. For some reason, the scene where he's opening those little drink umbrellas had me laughing...
May picks up on the emotions of others. Hmmm... So she's a human lie detector. Or even a human detector, period. Last night Jemma thought it was a superpower. I thought it a curse. We'll see where this leads.
No update on Yo-Yo. Don't they need to address this?
Oh. Really liked Deke's hat. Can't believe how much a good Fedora costs...
He has moved his game more towards Daisy's side now that a guy got killed in cold blood right next to him.
When Sousa notes that Howard Stark is a pompous ass, I think that was Coulson's initial impressions of Tony Stark, too. However, Coulson replies that "Big thinkers come off that way. It makes for a divide between those in the lab and those in the field." How interesting that he's come to that realization.
Right after, Luke (I think the Chronicom main bad guy's name is Luke) confronts Robo-Coulson. Coulson's viewpoint that humans are worth saving, is from a Coulson who knows he's not human anymore. And he accepts the consequences of being an immortal, where those he cares about will eventually be dead. He's gone from knowing he's going to die, to knowing he may never die. That's probably something we'll see resolved before the end of the season...
I thoroughly enjoyed Sousa's befuddlement when the team kept coming up with things like Hydra and Malick like they were common knowledge.
Sousa: I think SHIELD has been infiltrated by Hydra.
Coulson: Yep.
Mack: Yep.
Daisy: Yep...
Sousa: My superior, which is also classified.
Coulson: His name wouldn't be Wilford Malick...
And yes! Mack comes to his senses, and is going to save Sousa. A little subterfuge, and Coulson gets to say this line:
Coulson: Turns out being an LMD has it's perks, like taking two in the back without a fuss.
lol... I wonder if Jemma can fix his Sousa's limp...
And as we end the program, Coulson and Sousa discuss being dead, and we find the team is in 1973. Anyone remember the 70's? This should be fun! Flower Power title card next week. Calling it now.
In the epilogue, we find Luke has been left behind in 1955, and is making a deal with Malick. Either that, or Luke is going to take Wilford's face...
Then up comes the words, "In loving memory of Joseph Teague."
According to IMDB, he died on May 6, 2020. He was part of the production crew on 120 AoS episodes. If you look for a publicity photo, he's in a pinstripe suit wearing a fedora...
