Yes a comic reference. A story line basically that has a look that goes with it.
I think you'll like the short hair look once you see it in action (beyond just short clips in the trailer).

Only official poster so far is the teaser poster of the Avengers A (well, there's also the Comic Con poster/concept art - which those posters may have pulled some of the character images from). With the new trailer, I'm inclined to agree with you. Thanos had Thor by the head it looks like the same scene where Loki hands over the stone. My guess is he says, "let my brother live and I'll give you the stone". Not in those exact words, but something along those lines.
