I just finished my S2 rewatch of Daredevil (after S1 and JJ) in preparation for The Defenders and I have to say that I somehow enjoyed the season more the second time around. The two different plotlines of Frank Castle and Elektra, that seemed to be hardly fitting together during my first viewing actually make more sense to me now. It's true, they don't fit and sometimes the transition between them feels almost jarring, but that's exactly their purpose in the story. To show how Matt is pulled in two different directions in his life - in both halves of his life.
One of my biggest personal grievances with S2 had originally been the conflict between Nelson and Murdock, simply because I like Matt and Foggy together so much, but once I moved on from that, I was able to appreciate how much both characters were able to develop this way. Foggy leaving the office broke my heart the first time around, now I'm just excited to see him work withTrinity Hogarth at her firm. Same with Karen; she's much better off as a reporter than as Matt's and Foggy's secretary. Especially in case there's still a future for her and Matt in store. (No spoilers for Defenders, guys!!)
As I said, I also watched the first season again, which was the third time in total by now, and I couldn't wait for it to be over! Just like the second time around, I was already skipping any scene with Ben and his wife (just plain awful stuff!), but still, the season - especially the second half - just seems to drag on at times. S2 on the other hand really left me wanting more. I'm even looking forward to The Punisher now, which I wasn't really before. Gotta admit to not being the actor's biggest fan, though, which is mainly due to his role back on The Walking Dead, so that's not really fair to the character he's playing now.
There are still two things that massively irked me during the season. First, Karen getting into trouble. Again. And again. And again. And a few more times, just for good measure! As I said, I liked her development into a reporter, which felt really natural to me, and I can even see her with Matt, which many people seemed to have a problem with. But did she honestly have to be in the middle of a shootout and/or get kidnapped about twice an episode?? Was there no point at which the actress looked at the writers and said: "Seriously, guys?? Again?!?" Ugh!!!
My second complaint: The whole BS about Matt being unable to make out the fricking ninjas, just because they can mask their heartbeats. So what? He can make out 'negative space', can tell what's inside a closed drawer, can track swords, but not a bunch of people moving around? Plus, you'd think that a breath is actually louder than a heartbeat and that someone, who can hear noises through half the city wouldn't need to be told to listen for those in the first place! Again, ugh!!!
Other than that, though, I really enjoyed the season and after rewatching one or two episodes of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, I'll finally see The Defenders for myself, hoping to find out what happens to the Avocados at Law! And Karen!
