... just why? (In regards to the picture.) The sun's going dark for like two minutes, so aside from having special eclipse glasses and not looking at the sun with the naked eye, I don't see what other preparations should be needed. "Buy food and water in advance." What, are they expecting the apocalypse? No, like every school (college or otherwise), library, city government, hotel, theme park, *gas station*, public organization, and even entire *subdivisions*, are planning weekend long events centered around the eclipse so we're expecting madness in traffic. Me and my mom played around on the internet and you can't find an available hotel room in even the worse parts of St. Louis City (and that's saying something!) Nah, still overreacting imo.

This eclipse thing is already becoming insane. ... just why? (In regards to the picture.) The sun's going dark for like two minutes, so aside from having special eclipse glasses and not looking at the sun with the naked eye, I don't see what other preparations should be needed. "Buy food and water in advance." What, are they expecting the apocalypse? It all sounds like pretty sound advice to me. Have you ever seen news footage of some of the hurricane evacuation events here, ayanami ? Freeways can get so jammed up you don't move anywhere for 10 hrs. People run out of gas, and are stuck with nowhere to go. Even if they could move, the stores are long sold out of gas anyway. Its never a bad idea to pack some extra food and water when you are traveling, anyway. After all, we are Americans...200 miles is not a very far distance to travel at all! I used to commute that far, both ways, on a daily basis. No one alive here has seen this happen, unless they traveled to a foreign country, so I expect it will be a pretty big deal. I guess Warren Beatty might not bother with it RE: the following song-rumor has it that it was written about him xoxo

beren44 "No one alive here has seen this happen, unless they traveled to a foreign country..." In March of 1970 I saw a total eclipse near the coast of South Carolina. I've been waiting 47 years for the chance to see another one.

I've been waiting 47 years for the chance to see another one. I guess I misspoke slightly. You must have been on the edge of a path that clipped a small piece of the continent. A total eclipse has not crossed the mainland for 99 years, to my understanding. Although, as I stated previously, the next one is only 7 years away...and it will pass directly over my new residence All I have to do is stay alive that long!

and there is the answer! so my source was only so-so correct. Still, there are lots of people on the east coast, so quite a few must have seen it...those older than 47, anyway EDIT: LMAO, Carly Simon's song came out in 1972. That eclipse passed over Nova Scotia in 1970.. GO FIGURE! There was also one that I remember in 1977. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_October_12,_1977 What I remember is that we weren't allowed to look at it, just see a shadow reflection cast into a shoebox and I was thinking I was better off just waiting for pictures of it to be available.

You weren't busy watching 'Star Wars' for the fiftieth time during the eclipse?

The Amtrak Eclipse Train from Chicago to Carbondale ($153, round trip) sold out in 22 hours.
I can't remember the last time I saw something like this...

Lol, honestly, I think those stamps are really cool! It's not really uncommon for the post to release special stamp editions for certain events, after all.

Update:
Since a certain brand of eclipse glasses were recalled for not being 'official', almost every possible place (including my work, a rec center) are out of them and now they're on the level of a kid's toy that flies off the shelf at Christmas time: You Can't Easily Find Them Anywhere!
