I'm curious, does anyone else watch The Expanse on SyFy? It's one of the best Space Shows I have ever seen. Right now I'm praying for a 3rd season because ratings are in the toilet.

Awesome show. Got immersed early in S1 and it didn't disappoint. I've recorded the S2 eps (so far) but have yet to watch them (saving for a binge when AoS breaks between pods). How bad are the ratings compared to last year? Kind of surprises me as S1 was so damn good.

I'm not sure what last year's ratings were, but the latest episode pulled a .21 rating. There is apparently a deal with Netflix, so hopefully this can squeeze one more season of this show.

Absolutely agreed on the "best space show" part! I'm utterly in love with the show! I haven't watched S2 yet, though, as I'm also waiting to binge it. The wait between episodes would kill me otherwise, it's just so fantastic! Btw, isn't Steven Strait (Jim Holden) just an incredible Brett Dalton look-alike?

Indeed, he is very similar to Dalton.

Lol @ beren44, wondering whether there already was a thread for The Expanse!

Lol @ beren44 , wondering whether there already was a thread for The Expanse! I KNEW there was a thread! I've even posted in it long ago! I swear, it was NOT on my radar earlier today.

and yes, ayanami , I skirted around a spoiler, hopefully successfully, in the shoutbox. All I can say is, episode 2x05 ended so abruptly, I was expecting some resolution in 2x06. That is where I am stuck right now, after doing a bit of research. They just seemed to drop a plot line out, in even less fanfare than Hive and Lincoln getting 'spaced', with that tiny nuclear explosion...POOF...gone. end of story. I'm still glad that I don't have to look at that god awful hair-do anymore, though! Now that I know that I did not miss anything, I will have to restart from 2x06 and just take it in. This show has never been the best about continuity. I alternately love, and hate, episodes... some are so exciting and clever, yet the next just drags on forever..

OK, everyone..hold on to your hats, I have a lot to say. Not all of it good. I hope and trust that you will all read this as just an honest opinion, and nothing more; I am not trying to take jabs at anyone who just loves the show. I'll start on a positive note. The basic plot and premise are well thought out, and I may well go back and read the books, based on what the show has sold me on so far. In fact, I wish I had read the books first! Its a fresh idea based on a very possible twist in the future of mankind. As far as production values, I have (almost) no complaints. The set designs, cinematography, and direction are for the most part, top notch. If I were to bellyache about anything in this regard, it would be that a small handful of the actors are not up to the task, IMO. [edit: and the costume/makeup..good lord, were they just going with shock-value for some of the hair-do's? Makes it seem unbelievable..again, just a personal opinion]
Now, to the not-so-good stuff: I will probably never enjoy this show to its full potential, until I can watch it with closed captioning. Their decision to throw in such a horrible mixed-bag of accents, for the 'belters', really confounds me. I can only suppose that was a choice made in an effort to be 'socially correct and diverse', as is so often prevalent in many shows emanating from Canada (and the USA as well, for that matter). If it were only an accent I had ever actually heard before on Earth, and more consistent between characters, I think it would be easier to get used to, and understand. Most of the time, it is so choppy and inconsistent that I have NO clue what they said. And I do mean MOST...like, 75% of the time. That gets very frustrating. Which leads me to a production value issue. The actual physical recording and audio engineering. Although it has improved a bit, [hopefully they took some cues from early bad reviews], it still remains sub-par. If they have a space-suit helmet on, good luck understanding anything anyone says. And lastly, there are some physics and velocity-related issues that I question. As far as I remember, nothing has been mentioned about FTL ships or speeds being available in the show. I could be wrong, if I am, please feel free to correct me. Presuming that to be true, come on now! Wait just a minute. Earth launches a stockpile of nukes at an asteroid in the belt beyond Mars, and it arrives in hours?? And, a single space ship, no matter how big, is used to budge a HUGE asteroid not only out of its orbit, but attempts to direct it on a completely new trajectory, into the sun? So the 'roid changes its own path, accelerates to some ungodly speed, and rushes past Mars, Earth, and into Venus, in a matter of hours (OK, I'll even give you a matter of days here)?? That's pretty damn preposterous! (yes that was a quicky summary, but nonetheless..)
Rant over, and I'll keep watching! There is lots to like about the show too! Peace 'n love, like always, Beren.
