The whole movie was excellent and there were a few surprise cameos. Come for the movie, stay for the post-credits extra scenes.

That either screws the timeline up, because 8 years after the Avengers is *not* 2017, therefore the events of past movies haven't taken place concurrently with real time as we thought, or someone couldn't count.
Also, I was bothered by the lack of SHIELD and creation of a whole new organization just so that the movie could have a SHIELD that wasn't SHIELD that had existed (quietly) before the downfall of SHIELD...if that makes sense.

Yeah, I wish they would have just used SHIELD, too. I guess I just found the film to be so much fun that I was able to forgive those issues.

I think I could have too if I wasn't already so annoyed by the whole 'movies ignoring the series' thing that's plagued all the movies since AoU.

Truthfully, I didn't even think about SHIELD not being there while watching. I do admit that it would have made sense for it to be SHIELD though.

The problem with using SHIELD in this movie is that when they wrote it and shot it they had no real way of knowing what SHIELD's status would be when the movie comes out. They can't use characters from the TV show for the same reason. There's no conspiracy to piss in the cornflakes of fanboys and fangirls, it's simple logistics.
I would have loved if it had been Coulson that shows up instead of some SHIELD stand-in, but there's no point to getting bent out of shape about it.

One thing that kinda bugs me about this, though, is that the movie actually contradicted the show here and not just ignored stuff from it. I don't care about Shield not being there in the current events in Spider-Man Homecoming, but it's been explicitly stated on AoS that SHIELD was the organisation in control of the clean-up after The Avengers. That was one of the main recurring themes during S1 after all. To just write Damage Control into the movie instead, without at least making it a sub-division, affiliate or whatnot of Shield just feels weird to me. Still, awesome movie and that detail did't diminish my enjoyment of it in the slightest!

I suppose they don't want some sort of backlash from casual fans along the lines of "these movies are only for people who watch all the other stuff" but that is pretty thin IMO. The MCU is enough of a juggernaut that they can safely assume everyone (save a few) knows the basics and is aware they're seeing a film that takes place in a larger universe. Bond films do fine with people that haven't seen every one of them. So yeah, having SHIELD in the early scenes right after the incident would be fine and make sense to everyone. If they wanted to play it safe they could have introduced something where DC took over at some point (i.e. if they were worried about what potentially might be going on "today" with SHIELD). Or even just mention it with one extra line of dialogue about "SHIELD has assigned DC the task of cleanup..." Ah well.

I'll go with this thread for posting the chat while watching Homecoming.
