polgara , regarding our conversation in live-chat yesterday about May either knowing or not knowing about Providence, in episode 1x18, I agree with everything you said, it made little sense for May to hide all that knowledge, given what has just happened to SHIELD. That is precisely why I think the beginning of episode 1x20 sort of flies in the face of all that. May basically ambushes Hill by taking out the people tailing her, and has obviously not had recent contact, shown by the fact that Hill says, 'A phone call would have done it'. MAY: Coulson needs help. And he won't take it from me anymore. HILL: Where is he? M: Providence base. And he's got enough to worry about without obsessing over T.A.H.I.T.I. and who covered it up. H:You mean besides us. How much does he know? M: Enough. That they used alien biology, rewrote his memories, and that Fury did it under someone else's direction. I want to know who that was. Seems to me that May had full knowledge of Providence Base, as well as most of what went on at the guest house..except for the part that Fury literally buried from both of them. Which means that May was also playing dumb the whole time they flew to the GH to save Skye. The rest of that conversation semi-implicates Senator Pierce, and that brings up another question...DID Fury take orders from Pierce, or did he just act on his own to save Coulson, despite Coulson's own objections about the project? I don't think Pierce had anything to do with it, I think Fury was just making his own call.

In 'One Door Closes', Gonzalez basically says that Fury's reason for bringing Coulson back was solely to hand him the keys to the kingdom.
Sure, Gonzalez was not involved in Coulson's resurrection in any capacity, but I take that as the writers confirming that to us.
And yeah, May played dumb when they went to the Guest House to save Skye which I still say was stupid.

May knows the name of Providence base, because she's been there, and - not a stretch, considering Hill was Fury's second-in-command - apparently assumes that Hill knows about the base. There's nothing that indicates to me she knew about the base beforehand.

I agree with ayanami . She used the name because she had just been there and assumed Hill knew about the bases. I'm also not convinced she knew where the GH was. I doubt May knew anything about TAHITI until she was tasked with spying on Coulson.

Now she may have been told most of it when given her assignment, but I really doubt she knew about of it before then. If Coulson didn't know about the secret bases then why would May?

I doubt May knew anything about TAHITI until she was tasked with spying on Coulson. Yeah, even though May probably knew about most details concerning Coulson's resurrection once she got the job to keep an eye on him, there wouldn't really have been any reason for Fury to tell her the location of the Guest House.

I'll grant you that is totally possible, yet I am sticking to my guns on this. She sounds completely confident and totally in-the-know in the episode we are about to watch, about both topics.

There are reasons she could know and he could not. It could be an Operations thing where she could know about Providence as a Specialist and he wouldn't since, as an Communications agent (and not someone who tends to be in the field alone) he would have no reason to know. Or, the knowledge of Providence and many other bases was one of the things Fury had erased from Coulson's mind.
