Even before the days of Windows, (can you even remember DOS?) there was a 2-person strategy war game named Empire. It was a military turn-based game very similar to the board game of Risk. Global domination was the goal. You could play against the computer, take turns playing against another person on the same machine,, or if you were really lucky and had a phone modem, you could play against an opponent remotely.

I'm not quite sure... Was the dial-in number to play, 588-2300? I didn't play Empire, but I did play LPMUDs, which were a text based D&D type of game.
