I'm going to play devil's advocate here. We don't know how far this parent was away from seeing this student and/or whether or not they ever saw them from the front (if it was from far enough away, I can see how seeing someone in all black with a helmet on - plus carrying a bag - could be concerning in this day and age (unfortunately)). Also, it may not necessarily be that the parent wasn't aware of Star Wars, but it may have been more that the parent may not have understood that yesterday was "Star Wars day" and that there would be a justifiable reason for someone to be dressed up in a Star Wars related costume.
Also, *what if* the kid had decided to use yesterday and the fact that you *could* dress up and hide himself as a chance to do something terrible at that school? It is sad that we live in a world where we have to be concerned about these things, but personally I for one am glad that there was a response to this and thankfully it turned out to be nothing/was just innocent cosplay rather than someone shrugging their shoulders at someone dressed up on Star Wars day and having something bad actually end up happening (not saying it would have in this case, but you know the saying "better safe than sorry").
That's just my take on it (apologies if it didn't make sense... I've got Friday Brain).

I'm totally with nillindeiel on this one. And that's a sad state of affairs for today's world. When I read the arcticle, the first thought that went through my mind was, "Wow, I'm glad I grew up in an era where we could ride our bikes all over creation all day, play cowboys and indians with cap guns, and go trick-or-treating old-school style." If I was the parent of a school-aged kiddo now, I would have been very grateful to whoever called that in. Again, its just a sad sad fact of today's world. |
