What's yours? And I don't mean your favorite concert ever, necessarily, but more like WOW I was not expecting THAT to be so good!
Mine is easy. My girlfriend at the time was a Sting fanatic, and drug me to one of his concerts in 2004. I like Sting just fine, but doubt I would have attended it without her to encourage me. And Sting put on a superb show, without a doubt.
HOWEVER, this lady opened the show, and for my money she stole the entire night. I sat through nearly her whole set with my jaw hanging open and tears of joy in my eyes. The power, range, dynamics, and control she has over her voice is just beyond describable. I highly suggest you go see her if you EVER get a chance.
I literally get goosebumps every time I hear this particular version. Just her and a piano. And her voice was so strong, you got the feeling she didn't even need a PA system, to fill the entire outdoor venue. Hope you all enjoy this as much as I did... very very nice surprise, it was!
I would probably give Cheap Trick, back in the 80s, second place. Similar setup, my gal drug me to it, and it turned out to be a surprisingly good, very entertaining show, that I was not expecting.

I went to see Rush on the Hold Your Fire tour. Now Rush themselves I had high expectations for and they were met, but when I'd seen them on the Power Windows tour the opening act had been rather lame and I was expecting the same for the unknown group opening this time around. Well, the unknown group I probably would have disliked was cancelled that night - I don't know if it was due to illness or if they had a fallout with Rush or what - so Rush had picked up some local talent to fill in. That local talent was Tommy Shaw and he did most of the Styx classics along with his solo stuff. It was a very pleasant surprise.

I drove my high school sweetheart to Asheville to see Olivia Newton-John in concert. That was her favorite singer. I didn't know until he came on stage that Jim Stafford was the opening act. Made my day!

I'm envious..I have still yet to catch Rush, and they are one of my faves. I did see the Grand Illusion tour, which if memory serves, is when Tommy Shaw joined the band. And in my book, the pinnacle of their career. I love that album, along with their early works, i.e. Mademoiselle, Lorelei, Lady, etc. hmmm, those first two sound like suspiciously familiar characters from a certain TV show

Zaragoza, Spain 1982 - It's early evening and I'm hanging in one of my favorite watering holes. Things didn't rally pick up on Fri and Sat nights until between 10 PM and Midnight so I was just hangin around in one of my three "go-tos" and some young Spanish friends come up to me and say they're going to a concert and do I want to come. They assure me it was rock and they thought I 'd like it. Never heard of the band before but I said what the hell and went. Venue was in a converted warehouse but the sound was good. That's how I got introduced to Chrissy Hynde and The Pretenders. They weren't global, yet; and, I don't think they were really known in the states, but there was no question the talent was there. It was an awesome experience that became an awesome memory, especially when I saw them on MTV with their first (stateside) hit.

I saw them back in '92 and while Ian Anderson was quite energetic, the rest of the band looked like they'd sneaked out of the retirement home to come play. Quite frankly if you'd asked me back then I wouldn't have predicted anyone but Anderson to be alive 25 years later.

And the rest of the band was phenomenal as well. Hard to believe that so much music can come from 5 people. (special kudos to the drummer...so tight!) They played a 'classic hits' type concert, and everyone on stage had their parts absolutely like the original recordings. I can't express how much I enjoyed it!

A friend of mone and I surprised her kids (8 and 16 at the time) with a trip to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They'd gone with our group the year before and loved it. We went out for dinner before our evening show and drove past the arena, which proudly displayed the band's banner. Sat in the arena's lot for half an hour because we were early and stood in line. Both children were clueless until we got to the door! 😂 I just scored our tickets for this year, so this was fresh on my mind.
