Not sure if this line was a deliberate throwback to late Bill Paxton's character John Garrett, but it certainly wasn't a coincidence that episode 4x18 gave us this little gem from a nervous Coulson: "How about that story on Bakshi-News(!) the other day. That inhuman they found with lion paws for hands. So weird. Just the paws."When back in episode 1x18 "Providence" we had this exchange between Garrett and Ward: Garrett: "First time I came down here was to lock up Johnny Horton. Ever heard of him? That guy somehow gave himself these lion's paws for hands. Can you imagine?" Ward: "That doesn't seem practical." Garrett: "Everybody's got their own weird thing, I suppose."Either way, I thought it was a very lovely easter egg. (And right on time, too!)

Nicely spotted. I wondered what Coulson meant by that

I knew there had to be some significance, but didn't know what it was.

As someone who has seen every season 1 and 2 episode at least 10 times, I caught that reference right away. Also, the Hydra lab tech that was talking to May was Keith, Simmons' lab partner and supervisor when she was undercover in HYDRA.

He was delightful back in S2!
