Toniht is the annual Eurovision Song Contest - or as I still like to call it, the Grad Prix Eurovision de la Chanson - here in Europe, a music contest that dates back to the 50s. It used to be a very old-timey even with what we here in Germany call "Schlager" music, but in the last decade or two it was modernised a lot and now features a wide variety of pop music, the occasional rock and some really off the wall stuff. I think it might even be broadcast in the US, so if any of you guys get the chance, give it a look; the show is a hoot!
Tonight the contest takes place in the Ukraine, last year's winner, which, given the current civil war in parts of the country, is pretty remarkable in itself. The show's charta actually contains parts that forbid any political statements of contestants, etc, but we'll see if everyone adhers to that tonight. They did already ban the Russian candidate from appearing...
Politics aside, though, here are some of the past winners, to give you just a small taste of what kind of music gets featured during the ESC:
Winner 2016:
Winner 2015
Winner 2014:
Winner 2010
Winner 2006

Awesome. They're amazing; but since they've gone mainstream, I tired of 'em. They've done some pretty weird stuff; if they'd stick to doing covers like this I'd listen to 'em more. Thanks for this. It was nice to hear good a capella. I came across this today and wasn't sure where to post it, but it's too good not to share and at least it goes with the song.

Whoa, Falco? Okay, that is not an artist I had expected to see here! This was a hit over here during my college years. Huh, I didn't know he was famous even outside the German speaking region, but I just read that Rock Me Amadeus was actually the only German language song at the top of the Billboard charts ever. Cool! Falco's big days were actually a bit before my time (I remember reacting to the news of his death with "who?"), but I really like some of his songs and they're still being played on the radio occasionally. As for German songs you US folk might know, how about this one: (Knowing it just from the Watchmen soundtrack doesn't count!)

Oh, polgara and ayanami , this thread has slipped by me for weeks. I love Young Frankenstein's version of 'Putting on the Ritz'! And also, 99 Red Balloons..it always reminds me of this song, by 4 Non-Blondes, a song that my dear friend from Austria played amazingly well, on my back porch, when they visited thanks for the memory..hard to believe that was 10 yrs. ago, already!

It's another song from my college years.
