Some of you certainly remember that song, from the album, 'Fandango', and many other songs, from 'Tres Hombres', that put them permanently on the charts, yet I'm willing to bet not many know the crazy, true story of what that is all about. Let me assure you, what follows is a surreal, real story. In fact, most of that album was written in reference to the town that my family grew up in, and that ZZ Top used to frequent on a regular basis.
Wolfman Jack is a prominent part of this story also. It is a crazy, crazy bit of West Texas history. I know because I lived it. I know the Brinkley family. I drove by the estate every day of my life, for many years. Enough about that in the article that follows. ZZ Top was voted in by the student body to be our high school prom band in 1974. They used to hang out in our town, and 'across the river' [ The Rio Grande] in Mexico, and the songs they wrote in those days all pertain to real life events. The rather conservative school board denied us, and cancelled the gig.
XERF *the X* was a radio station built by Dr. Brinkley, across the river. Wolfman Jack got his start, and road to fame, from the sheer power of that AM radio station, that could literally be heard around the world. It was built in Mexico, because it was illegal in the USA to have a station that powerful.
The Brinkley mansion housed what I believe is known to be the 13th largest pipe organ in the world at the time, bigvanray. I know you would appreciate that fact. Without further adieu, take a gander at the following story. Those poor goats!
