Did anyone else hate how they changed the scene with the librarian in the beginning? I don't care that they made him a black guy, but why skip the part where he gifts Belle her favourite book? Or leave out the line about there not being any new books since yesterday? This was such a fun and charming moment in the original, but here the whole scene seemed just odd and almost out of place to me. One correction in the film Père (Father) Robert isn't a librarian, he's the village pastor/priest/clergyman. I was actually fine with the change. It never made sense for a village as small as Belle's to have a full blown book store...and with them so out of the way it would make sense that new books wouldn't be coming in daily... Probably not even weekly. I was okay with the change in dialogue going more to the fact that Belle used the books to travel the world while being confined to such a small village. That's a fair point, though I have to confess that I never actually realised that it was supposed to be a book store in the original. I've rewatched that scene by now, so I know that's what the sign above the front door says, but since Belle treated it just like a library, that's what little me simply assumed at the time. Plus, changing the bookstore to the priest's library doesn't really demand any of the changes I complained about above. Belle still could have asked about any new books arriving with Robert replying "not since yesterday". And even if some might argue against that line, I really can't see anything wrong with him pointing out that Belle has read the book she selects countless times already and him giving it to her as a gift. beren44: Those are cute, I want one! |
