I wonder if bringing Ward back might have done as much damage as it did good. Sure, it might have made some people watch the show again, but there are more than enough people who didn't want to see the guy ever again. Maybe they stayed away in turn.

That's a possibility. It also could be due to the long break and some might have just forgotten or not realized it was back on.
