OK OK STOP right now, I am not talking about the idiotic way in which FOX mismanaged the whole affair. I truly think the show sort of shot itself in the foot, right from the very first opening scenes of the *real* pilot episode, 'Serenity'. [no, not the movie of the same name, for all those who are unaware]
I have watched the entire series countless times. Sometimes on a rainy saturday I will sit for 12 hours and just do a marathon. All 14 episodes PLUS the movie can be enjoyed in that time frame.
I had never even heard of Joss Whedon before watching the show, I was led there by my adoration of Summer Glau, in the role she played as a robot, in Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. .
Every time I watch Firefly, though, my mind goes back to the first time I saw it. Yes, I am finally getting to my point.
The opening scene, 6 minutes or less, of the war, was far less than spectacular, in terms of special effects. Honestly, it was pretty 'cheesy'. And not really worthy of the screen time it had. There surely could have been a better way to introduce the backstory of the show.
THEN, immediately afterward, came the fatal nail in the coffin. The scene with Wash playing with dinosaurs. I know, I know, he was the comic relief in the show, yet both of those scenes were so far from what the real theme of the show was about. When I saw it the first time, at that point I was thinking, 'what in the hell have I gotten myself into here?'
Don't get me wrong, I love Wash as much as all the rest, and that scene could have worked perfectly in a later episode. I just think the timing was WAY off, in terms of presenting a show to an audience.
