"...and the 2022 Oscar for Best Animated Feature goes to... Raya and the Last Dragon!"And,yeah, you can quote me on that! Honestly, this movie is just magnificent! It's set in a fictional world based on different Asian cultures, which was once inhabited by dragons. But now the dragons are gone, and the once united country has been torn apart by fights between the different tribes. (Basically: Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked! ) And when things go from bad to worse, Raya, one of the tribe leaders' daughter, puts all her hope on finding the mystical last remaining dragon to save the world! I know that considering all the horrible things that happened in the word due to Covid, it's silly to complain about messed-up movie schedules. And yet I am honestly upset that I might never be able to experience this wonderful film in theater. And maybe even more upset, that until a couple of days ago, I had never even heard of it! If it hadn't been for Raya's voice actress, Kelly Marie Tran, making an appearance on The Daily Show, and them showing a clip, I would still have no idea that this movie even existed! But now I do, and should it show up in my local theater, I'll be sure to watch it again! The animation alone is glorious! It really feels like a giant leap for the industry. Then there are the wonderful characters, the diverse word, the sparsely used but effective humour, and last but not least, the major amount of ass-kicking! So, yeah, go and watch it, you won't regret it!

I finally had a chance to see this film today (4/18/2021). Actually, I had a chance last week, but the route to the theater would have taken me past a KKK rally. I decided to wait.
I agree that it is a contender for Best Animated Feature next year, but its chances would have been better if the release were delayed until later in the year. I liked the film, and agree that it is probably best on a big screen, but the film was a bit heavy on the theme of all problems can be solved if you just trust someone who has repeatedly proven that she is untrustworthy.
I have spent much of the last month or so trying to catch up on Academy Award nominated films. Thanks to nominations for Mulan and Over the Moon, this is the third Asian-themed film that I have seen in the past week. While reading on the latest version of Mulan, I learned that they dropped the comic-relief sidekick dragon character from the animated film because the character was not popular in China, where dragons are respected. While I understand that Raya and the Last Dragon is based on South-East Asian culture, not Chinese culture, I was amused to see that had a comic-relief dragon sidekick. It might help that the "dragon" characters in this film are more like nagas than like Chinese dragons, although I do not know if a naga as a comic-relief sidekick would be any more palatable in South-East Asia, where they are revered.
While here, I might as well post this:
