First of all, this post comes with a request for Jemma Simmons to create a new Picard sub-board and move this thread there. Thanks in advance!
Now, I'm kinda wondering why there hasn't been any talk about this show here on the board before, given the fact that there are quite a few trekkies among the members here. Then again, it seems as if Picard's plot has been kept tightly under wraps before the release, so I guess there wasn't much to talk about yet. Now the show's pilot is out, though, and I have to say that I'm reeeeeally enjoying it so far!
I know that a comparision with The Mandalorian isn't really productive, given the shows' totally different setup, but so what, I'm making it anyway! For one, there's always been kind of a rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars. Plus, the release dates are so close to each other that it's kinda hard not to take a look at the last big name sci-fi release and see how it differs from the newest Star Trek show. My verdict being: Yeah, The Mandalorian was fun and all, and sure, The Baby is insanely adorable, but holy cow, Picard actually has plot! And dialogue!! And a premise that isn't summed up in a ten words sentence!!! Wohoo!
The pilot focuses on Jean-Luc Picard (well, duh! ), retired Star Fleet admiral who is now living on his vineyard in France after quitting Star Fleet years ago. The seperation wasn't exactly amicably, which is explained briefly in the episode. There's a lot of dramatic backstory there, with some of the why's and how's still a mystery - even for the characters - so I assume that will be a major focus of the season. There's also the young woman Dahj, who suddenly develops insane fighting skills during a brutal attack on her, giving me massive River Tam flashbacks! She is also weirdly connected to Picard, but I don't want to give away any of the answers the pilot episode already provides here. As far as familiar faces go, there's a TNG special guest star in the pilot episode and as for species, Romulans seem to be the focus this time. And also maybe another species, but again, spoiler territory, sooo...
While Discovery already had a bigger focus on one character than any of the previous Star Trek shows so far, Picard takes this premise even further. Much further in fact, but then again, if you start watching a show called Picard and are expecting an ensemble cast cruising around on a ship or something, that's clearly your own fault! Also, much like on Discovery, the special effects are once again on point! Man, CBS is really pumping money into their Star Trek shows and it shows. In Picard there's also the fight choreography that stands out and can easily keep up with any superheroes flipping around on the various screens these days. Don't worry, though, Jean-Luc isn't actually the one doing the flipping!
My one "complaint" about the show so far is that it almost gave me a fricking heart attack in the last five minutes! There's a bit of a teaser at the end of the first episode, with new characters being introduced, and for a second there I could have sworn that it was Spock from the second season of Discovery walking onto the screen! Well, it's not him, but damn if those two didn't have the same fashion advisor!
