We are less than 21 hours away from the announcement of Academy Award nominees and four weeks from the ceremony. In the lead up to the nomination announcement, I like to compile various predictions of who will get Academy Award nominations as a test in seeing how predicable they are. In all cases below, the frontrunners are the films predicted to get nominations. The dark horses are the ones that should come close but fall short. If any frontrunner is not nominated, it is likely that it is a dark horse that takes its place. Long shots are films that someone thought of as a possibility, but just a possibility. Note that these are predictions. I do not necessarily believe that these are the films that should get nominations. That will come next.
I know that you are most interested in knowing who will be nominated for Best Live-Action Short, but I will tease you by starting with Best Picture.
Best Motion Picture of the Year
Frontrunners:
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
The Irishman
Parasite
1917
Marriage Story
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Ford v Ferrari
Dark Horses:
Knives Out
The Farewell
Bombshell
The Two Popes
Uncut Gems
Long Shots:
Pain and Glory
Rocketman
Dolemite Is My Name
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Avengers: Endgame
Us
Just Mercy
Hustlers
Richard Jewell
Honey Boy
The Lighthouse
Toy Story 4
A Hidden Life
Best Picture predictions are tricky as I need to predict how many nominations there will be as well as which films will be nominated. I am predicting that there will be nine nominations. These predictions, along with all others, are in order. For example, if there turns out to be only eight nominations, I am predicting that Ford v Ferrari will be left out. If there are ten, I am predicting that Knives Out will get the last nomination.
Most prognosticators believe that the top four are the front runners to win. However, there is strong consensus that the next five will be nominated.
Best Achievement in Directing
Frontrunners:
Bong Joon Ho—Parasite
Quentin Tarantino—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Martin Scorsese—The Irishman
Sam Mendes—1917
Greta Gerwig—Little Women
Dark Horses:
Taika Waititi—Jojo Rabbit
Noah Baumbach—Marriage Story
Todd Phillips—Joker
Pedro Almodóvar—Pain and Glory
Long Shots:
Josh and Benny Safdie—Uncut Gems
Lulu Wang—The Farewell
Fernando Meirelles—The Two Popes
James Mangold—Ford v. Ferrari
Jay Roach—Bombshell
Terrence Malick—A Hidden Life
Rian Johnson—Knives Out
Clint Eastwood—Richard Jewell
Robert Eggers—The Lighthouse
Jordan Peele—Us
There is strong consensus about the top four candidates, who happen to direct the four frontrunners for Best Picture. Gerwig, Waititi, and Baumbach are in a tight race for the final slot, with Phillips and Almodóvar not far behind.
Best Original Screenplay
Frontrunners:
Noah Baumbach—Marriage Story
Quentin Tarantino—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won—Parasite
Rian Johnson—Knives Out
Lulu Wang—The Farewell
Dark Horses:
Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns—1917
Pedro Almodovar—Pain and Glory
Emily Halpern & Sarah Haskins and Susanna Fogel and Katie Silberman—Booksmart
Long Shots:
Jordan Peele—Us
Ronald Bronstein & Josh Safdie & Benny Safdie—Uncut Gems
Charles Randolph—Bombshell
Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewsk—Dolemite Is My Name
Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller—Ford v Ferrari
Lee Hall—Rocketman
Lena Waithe—Queen & Slim
Trey Edward Shults—Waves
Best Adapted Screenplay
Frontrunners:
Steve Zaillian—The Irishman
Taika Waititi—Jojo Rabbit
Greta Gerwig—Little Women
Anthony McCarten—The Two Popes
Todd Phillips and Scott Silver—Joker
Dark Horse:
Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster—A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Long Shots:
Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller—Ford v Ferrari
Andrew Stanton & Stephany Folsom—Toy Story 4
Lorene Scafaria—Hustlers
Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Lanham—Just Mercy
Matthew Michael Carnahan & Mario Correa—Dark Waters
Edward Norton—Motherless Brooklyn
Billy Ray—Richard Jewell
There is a lot of consensus for screenplays except for which category to put Ford v Ferrari. If I read it correctly, it should be an Original Screenplay as it is based on research rather than a specific source or two. This is not unusual. Last year, there was strong consensus for A Star Is Born to get a nomination for Original Screenplay. It was nominated as an Adapted Screenplay. Did people not realize that this was a remake, or did they see that it was a remake of a remake of a remake of a remake and view it as being based on research rather than an adaptation?
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Frontrunners:
Renée Zellweger—Judy
Scarlett Johansson—Marriage Story
Charlize Theron—Bombshell
Awkafina—The Farewell
Saoirse Ronan—Little Women
Dark Horses:
Cynthia Erivo—Harriet
Lupita Nyong’o—Us
Alfre Woodard—Clemency
Long Shots:
Jodie Turner-Smith—Queen & Slim
Julianne Moore—Gloria Bell
Helen Mirren—The Good Liar
Mary Kay Place—Diane
Florence Pugh—Midsommar
Beanie Feldstein—Booksmart
Michelle Dockery—Downton Abbey
Anne Hathaway—Dry Run
Kristen Stewart—Seberg
Felicity Jones—The Aeronauts
Honor Swinton-Byrne—The Souvenir
Jessie Buckley—Wild Rose
Mindy Kaling—Late Night
Margot Robbie—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Taraji P. Henson—The Best of Enemies
Juliette Binoche—The Truth
Catherine Deneuve—The Truth
Ronan and Ervivo are practically tied for the final slot, with Awkafina not far ahead of them. I believe that some of the Long Shot films are not eligible for Academy Awards.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Frontrunners:
Joaquin Phoenix—Joker
Adam Driver—Marriage Story
Leonardo DiCaprio—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Antonio Banderas—Pain and Glory
Taron Egerton—Rocketman
Dark Horses:
Jonathan Pryce—The Two Popes
Christian Bale—Ford v Ferrari
Robert De Niro—The Irishman
Eddie Murphy—Dolemite Is My Name
Adam Sandler—Uncut Gems
Long Shots:
George MacKay—1917
Michael B. Jordan—Just Mercy
Robert Pattinson—The Lighthouse
Roman Griffin Davis—Jojo Rabbit
Daniel Craig—Knives Out
Willem Dafoe—The Lighthouse
Winston Duke—Us
I find it a bit surprising that De Niro is not getting more love considering his stature in the industry and considering the love that The Irishman is getting elsewhere.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Frontrunners:
Laura Dern—Marriage Story
Margot Robbie—Bombshell
Jennifer Lopez—Hustlers
Scarlett Johansson—Jojo Rabbit
Zhao Shuzhen—The Farewell
Dark Horses:
Florence Pugh—Little Women
Kathy Bates—Richard Jewell
Annette Bening—The Report
Nicole Kidman—Bombshell
Long Shots:
Margot Robbie—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Julia Butters—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Thomasin McKenzie—Jojo Rabbit
Margaret Qualley—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Anna Paquin—The Irishman
Octavia Spencer—Luce
Julia Fox—Uncut Gems
Da’vine Joy Randolph—Dolemite Is My Name
Robbie can be nominated for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood only if she receives more votes for that film than for Bombshell.
Meryl Streep appeared in an Oscar-bait film (Little Women), yet nobody seems to think that she has a chance at a nomination. When was the last time that happened?
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Frontrunners:
Brad Pitt—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Joe Pesci—The Irishman
Al Pacino—The Irishman
Tom Hanks—A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Song Kang Ho—Parasite
Dark Horses:
Anthony Hopkins—The Two Popes
Jamie Foxx—Just Mercy
Willem Dafoe—The Lighthouse
Long Shots:
Alan Alda—Marriage Story
Dean-Charles Chapman—1917
Timothée Chalamet—Little Women
Sam Rockwell—Richard Jewell
Sam Rockwell—Jojo Rabbit
Wesley Snipes—Dolemite Is My Name
John Lithgow—Bombshell
Taika Waititi—Jojo Rabbit
Shia LaBeouf—Honey Boy
Random trivia question: Who has more Academy Award nominations for 21st century films, Tom Hanks or me? Actually, this is a trick question. We are both tied for zero nominations. Hanks used to be an Academy darling with a heavy emphasis on the past tense. Despite appearing in a bunch of Oscar-bait films, he has not received a single nomination since Cast Away. Even though A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood looks like it will receive no love in any other category except possibly for the screenplay, many prognosticators think that Hanks will snag a nomination here, perhaps to make up for snubbing him for so long.
Best Achievement in Cinematography
Frontrunners:
Roger Deakins—1917
Rodrigo Prieto—The Irishman
Robert Richardson—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Lawrence Sher—Joker
Jarin Blaschke—The Lighthouse
Dark Horse:
Phedon Papamichael—Ford v Ferrari
Long Shots:
Mihai Malaimare Jr.—Jojo Rabbit
Jörg Widmer—A Hidden Life
Robbie Ryan—Marriage Story
Kyung-pyo Hong—Parasite
Claire Mathon—Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Blaschke and Papamichael are almost tied for the last slot.
Not everybody makes predictions for awards other than picture, directing, acting, and screenplay, so there will be fewer candidates for the rest of the categories.
Best Achievement in Film Editing
Frontrunners:
Thelma Schoonmaker—The Irishman
Fred Raskin—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Andrew Buckland and Michael McCusker—Ford v. Ferrari
Yang Jin-mo—Parasite
Jennifer Lame—Marriage Story
Dark Horses:
Lee Smith—1917
Long Shots:
Jeff Groth—Joker
Tom Eagles—Jojo Rabbit
Ronald Bronstein & Benny Safdie—Uncut Gems
As I understand it, you can probably count the number of edits in 1917 with two hands. On the other hand, I consider the editing to be the biggest weakness in Marriage Story, so I would not mind seeing 1917 get the last slot.
Best Achievement in Production Design
Frontrunners:
Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Dennis Gassner and Lee Sandales—1917
Bob Shaw and Regina Graves—The Irishman
Ra Vincent and Nora Sopková—Jojo Rabbit
Lee Ha Jun and Cho Won Woo, Han Ga Ram and Cho Hee—Parasite
Dark Horses:
Mark Friedberg and Kris Moran—Joker
Jess Gonchor—Little Women
Long Shot:
Mark Tildesley—The Two Popes
Best Achievement in Costume Design
Frontrunners:
Ariane Phillips—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Ruth E. Carter—Dolemite Is My Name
Julian Day—Rocketman
Jacqueline Durran—Little Women
Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson—The Irishman
Dark Horses:
Mayes C. Rubeo—Jojo Rabbit
Anna Robbins—Downton Abbey
Mark Bridges—Joker
Long Shots:
Jacqueline Durran and David Crossman—1917
Mark Bridges—Marriage Story
Luca Canfora and Beatriz De Benedetto—The Two Popes
Jany Temime—Judy
Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling
Frontrunners:
Bombshell
Joker
Judy
Rocketman
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Dark Horses:
Dolemite Is My Name
1917
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Long Shots:
Downton Abbey
Starting this year, there will be five nominees in this category. As noted above, these predictions are listed in order, so it looks like Rocketman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be the two films that take advantage of this expansion.
Best Achievement in Sound Editing
Frontrunners:
1917
Ford v. Ferrari
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Avengers: Endgame
Dark Horses:
Joker
Rocketman
Long Shots:
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Ad Astra
Uncut Gems
Parasite
Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
Frontrunners:
1917
Ford v. Ferrari
Rocketman
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Dark Horses:
Avengers: Endgame
Joker
Long Shots:
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Parasite
Ad Astra
Uncut Gems
This may be the last year in which Sound Editing and Sound Mixing are treated as separate categories.
Best Achievement in Visual Effects
Frontrunners:
The Irishman
The Lion King
Avengers: Endgame
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
1917
Dark Horse:
Alita: Battle Angel
Long Shots:
Terminator: Dark Fate
Gemini Man
Best Achievement in Music (Original Score)
Frontrunners:
Thomas Newman—1917
Randy Newman—Marriage Story
Hildur Guonadóttir—Joker
John Williams—Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Alexandre Desplat—Little Women
Dark Horses:
Michael Giacchino—Jojo Rabbit
Long Shots:
Alberto Iglesias—Pain and Glory
Alan Silvestri—Avengers: Endgame
Michael Abels—Us
Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders—Ford v Ferrari
Daniel Pemberton—Motherless Brooklyn
Christophe Beck—Frozen II
Best Achievement in Music (Original Song)
Frontrunners:
"Into the Unknown" Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—Frozen II
"(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again" Elton John and Bernie Taupin—Rocketman
"Stand Up" Cynthia Erivo and Joshua Campbell—Harriet
"Spirit" Ilya Salmanzadeh, Labrinth, and Beyoncé—The Lion King
"Glasgow (No Place Like Home)" Mary Steenburgen, Kate York, and Caitlin Smith—Wild Rose
Dark Horses:
“I’m Standing With You” Diane Warren—Breakthrough
"Speechless" Alan Menken, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Naomi Scott—Aladdin
"A Glass of Soju" Bong Joon Ho—Parasite
Long Shots:
"Letter to my Godfather" Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams—The Black Godfather
"I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away" Randy Newman—Toy Story 4
"Daily Battles" Thom Yorke—Motherless Brooklyn
"Da Bronx" Charles Fox and Paul Williams—The Bronx, USA
Best Animated Feature Film
Frontrunners:
Toy Story 4
Frozen II
Missing Link
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Dark Horses:
Klaus
Abominable
Long Shots:
Weathering with You
Funan
The Lion King
It is a sign of how much the Academy seems to hate the Lego films that, even in a year as weak as 2019 for animation, nobody thinks that The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part has a chance at a nomination.
I am not sure that the Academy considers The Lion King to be an animated film.
BestForeign Language International Film of the Year
Frontrunners:
South Korea—Parasite
Spain—Pain and Glory
France—Les Misérables
Senegal—Atlantics
Dark Horses:
North Macedonia—Honeyland
Hungary—Those Who Remained
Poland—Corpus Christi
Long Shots:
Czech Republic—The Painted Bird
Russia—Beanpole
Estonia—Truth and Justice
Norway—Out Stealing Horses
Honeyland and Those Who Remained are actually tied for the final spot with Corpus Christi barely behind them.
This category has been rebranded for this year as the Academy finally figured out that, for example, Parasite is not a "foreign-language film" for people who live in South Korea.
Best Documentary Feature
Frontrunners:
For Sama
American Factory
Apollo 11
Honeyland
One Child Nation
Dark Horses:
The Cave
Long Shots:
Midnight Family
Maiden
The Biggest Little Farm
Edge of Democracy
Knock Down the House
The Great Hack
The two categories above are difficult to predict. Most prognosticators believe that films that already had a North American release have an advantage in getting nominations. Academy voters, on the other hand, often prefer to use the nominations to promote films that have not yet been released. I believe that Parasite will get a nomination no matter what, but the chances of Pain and Glory, Honeyland, and Apollo 11 may be overrated above.
Best Animated Short Film
Frontrunners:
Kitbull
The Physics of Sorrow
Hair Love
Sister
Dcera (Daughter)
Dark Horses:
Mind My Mind
Uncle Thomas: Accounting for the Days
Long Shots:
Hors Piste
Mémorable
He Can’t Live without Cosmos
Best Documentary Short Subject
Frontrunners:
Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)
Fire in Paradise
Walk Run Cha-Cha
Stay Close
Life Overtakes Me
Dark Horse:
St. Louis Superman
Long Shots:
The Nightcrawlers
After Maria
Ghosts of Sugar Land
Little Hands
Best Live Action Short Film
Frontrunners:
The Neighbors’ Window
Little Hands
Refugee
Brotherhood
A Sister
Dark Horses:
Nefta Football Club
Miller & Son
Long Shot:
Sometimes, I Think about Dying
I find that predictions for short films bear very little resemblance to what is actually nominated.
Summary
If all predictions are correct, which will not happen, and if Honeyland gets the last International Film slot, the total nominations for feature-length films would be:
12—Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
10—The Irishman
8—1917
7—Marriage Story
7—Parasite
6—Little Women
6—Joker
5—Rocketman

It is a sign of how much the Academy seems to hate the Lego films that, even in a year as weak as 2019 for animation, nobody thinks that The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part has a chance at a nomination.
I am not sure that the Academy considers The Lion King to be an animated film.
Best
Frontrunners:
South Korea—Parasite
Spain—Pain and Glory
France—Les Misérables
Senegal—Atlantics
Dark Horses:
North Macedonia—Honeyland
Hungary—Those Who Remained
Poland—Corpus Christi
Long Shots:
Czech Republic—The Painted Bird
Russia—Beanpole
Estonia—Truth and Justice
Norway—Out Stealing Horses
Honeyland and Those Who Remained are actually tied for the final spot with Corpus Christi barely behind them.
This category has been rebranded for this year as the Academy finally figured out that, for example, Parasite is not a "foreign-language film" for people who live in South Korea.
Best Documentary Feature
Frontrunners:
For Sama
American Factory
Apollo 11
Honeyland
One Child Nation
Dark Horses:
The Cave
Long Shots:
Midnight Family
Maiden
The Biggest Little Farm
Edge of Democracy
Knock Down the House
The Great Hack
The two categories above are difficult to predict. Most prognosticators believe that films that already had a North American release have an advantage in getting nominations. Academy voters, on the other hand, often prefer to use the nominations to promote films that have not yet been released. I believe that Parasite will get a nomination no matter what, but the chances of Pain and Glory, Honeyland, and Apollo 11 may be overrated above.

I find that predictions for short films bear very little resemblance to what is actually nominated.
