Just bought this on iTunes but probably won’t get to it until this weekend. I’ve heard tons of great stuff about it!

I just watched this while doing some paperwork and thought it was absolutely brilliant! Some of the humour may not be to everyone's liking, but the plot was fantastic. I also was not expecting (HUGE spoiler alerts) the giant kick in the feels. I mean, the foreshadowing was quite prevalent but when we got the Jojo reaction and realize what he sees... I totally ugly cried and I am not one to cry at movies.

Imaginary Hitler aside, most of the movie's funny parts also stemmed from the insanity that was the sad reality at the time. I think my favourite joke, though, was the one with the German shepards that the guy from the Hitlerjugend had brought in, even though his boss wanted the dog breed instead. Note that if we're to assume that the characters are actually talking German, this gag simply wouldn't work, because the literal English translation for the breed is "German shepard dog", not just "German shepard". I know in English the word "dog" here is optional, in German it is not. Man, those poor guys who had to write the German dubbed version of the movie...

Imaginary Hitler aside, most of the movie's funny parts also stemmed from the insanity that was the sad reality at the time. Oh I definitely agree! I just kept waiting for either Jojo or his mother to be caught due to all the foreshadowing. It was nearly the end of the war, so it started to feel like they were 'safe'. Then WHAM right in the feels! When he tried to tie her shoe I lost it.I think my favourite joke, though, was the one with the German shepards that the guy from the Hitlerjugend had brought in, even though his boss wanted the dog breed instead. I can imagine trying to do the translations for anything can be challenging to try and catch all the nuances and plays on words. I know that's why Guillermo del Toro insists on doing his own translations for his Spanish language films.

I also just wanted to note how much I wish we could have seen more of Sam Rockwell in this! He was brilliant as well. I really hope this film does well at the Academy Awards tomorrow!

Yeah, he was my favourite character in the movie! "Don't do that!" That line cracked me up so much.
