After trying my best to watch Stargate SG-1, I had to give up about 1.5 seasons in..way too cheesy, and cheap. I recently gave a shot at the last spin-off, SG Universe, and have to say, its better. Lots. And lots to bellyache about as well, but...
The show has a really good premise, and the first 3 or 4 episodes are a bit slow, yet do well to set up the premise. Then, a slump of 4 or 5 episodes in a row nearly forced me to give up. Lo and behold, I was glad I stuck it out, because around episode 10 or so, it started getting really interesting, with only one or two more dog episodes in the first 20 episode season.
The big surprise for me was, Ming-Na! I had no idea she starred in this show. Also, Jennifer Spence, from Continuum fame, is a regular. I like them both. I have to say, I have bragged a lot about how I think Ming is a good actress on AoS, given that her character is so seemingly different from her real world persona, yet I am ever so slightly disappointed too, as her acting chops are nearly identical in both shows.. *minus the ninja aspect*. I'll have to look out for other stuff in which she stars, to see if her range is as broad as I have hoped.
Just curious if any of you have watched the show, and your opinions.. I still have half of season 2 to view, and understand already that it was cancelled and ends on a cliffhanger, so GRRsss already...but I will stick it out.
EDIT: It is starting to get really scattered by the halfway point of S2..not surprised it was cancelled...

Stargate Universe better than SG-1. Hahaha. Ahahahahahahahaha. *throws head back and falls from chair* Ahahahahaha hahahaha!!!
Yeah, no. A ton of unlikable douchbag characters flying through space, with Eli and Dr. Rush being the only redeeming qualities. I'm just so glad it was cancelled in time so that Robert Carlyle got to play Rumpelstilzchen on Once Upon a Time.

Ten seasons vs. two seasons. I think those numbers speak for themselves. Plus, if you're complaining about quality, you have to consider that there are twelve years between the first seasons of both shows. SG:U might look prettier, but all those advancements in special effects, in addition to the different setting, will do that for a show. SG-1 was in its premise a 90's show where 80% of alien planets were doubled by Canadian woods. Obviously it looks cheaper. But it had an endearing group of main characters and a widespread and well fleshed out universe that SG:U could never even get close to. But, to compromise here, I'd like to point out that my favourite Stargate show is actually Atlantis, in large parts due to the character of Dr. Rodney McKay, who incidentally originated on SG-1.
