I watched it in its entirety a few years ago, and just started a re-watch. My failing memory tells me I liked the first 3 seasons, and thought it dropped a bit in the last two seasons. Upon a re-watch, the first two episodes are great. I just finished the 1x03 episode, and already feel like I need to give it another view before I continue.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first couple of episodes, and John Noble, along with almost all of the cast, does a tremendous job. The only actor I have an issue with..and I remember this from my first watch.. is the second lead, Joshua Jackson in the role of Peter Bishop. I feel he is the weak link in the whole series. He kind of reminds me of the second lead in Blindspot.. Sullivan Stapleton as Kurt Weller...both actors are better suited for daytime soaps..obviously, just my opinion.
And beyond that, I just wondered if any of you had watched the series, and would like to know your opinions.

OK, wow.... I just watched the first few minutes of 1x04, and I gotta say, I think AoS totally ripped off a character from this show..in the form of Enoch...Take a look and see if you don't agree. Mind you, I am only 4 minutes into the episode, but the parallels are pretty obvious so far... comments?

I watched the show when it first aired but have not watched it since then. I agree that John Noble was a standout in the cast, but I did not mind Joshua Jackson as much as you did. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reminded me of Fringe a bit in that both started out with the same formula. Something weird happens somewhere. The team goes to investigate. The team saves the day.* In both cases the frequency of "something weird" dropped considerably as the show focused more on story arcs. Unlike with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it felt like the story arcs eventually overwhelmed Fringe, which led to what you (and I) perceive as a drop in quality. I would actually characterize the drop as more than a bit. In fact I skipped the fifth season altogether.
* The X-Files may have originated this formula, and Torchwood followed it as well during its first two seasons.

I had to look up the plot of the episode to confirm my guess, but I was correct about the character in question. This was an example of an "Observer." What was Enoch's mission? He was here to observe. It would not surprise me if there was an influence. If I remember correctly, one of the Observers (I do not remember if it was this one) was a bit of a renegade, a bit like Enoch who had a reputation for being reckless.

Surprised to see a few familiar faces showing up in this show. Agent Calderon is a regular, and President Ellis has a guest role. And yes, Calderon is just as annoying and obnoxious as he was in SHIELD. I recognized his voice before I even saw his face.

Well, another, even more blatant rip-off from Fringe...the automatic typewriter in the hidden back room, accessible only by knowing the secret phrase, on Agent Carter... 100% done earlier on Fringe...hmmm..... and I am only just into the 2nd season. Wonder what else I will find?
