Seriously, just how good is Discovery's season 2?!? I already really enjoyed the show's first season, but this year they not only kept up the high quality, but also addressed some of the issues they had in their freshman run.
- Firstly, moving away from the Klingon plot. Not that there was anything wrong with the plot per se, but imo they had f*cked up the character design and some other stylistic choices in that regard so much that there was no point really in salvaging that angle any time soon.
- Less gore! Not that I generally mind it much in my shows (big The Walking Dead fan here!), but I think there has to be a point to the gore and violence on screen. And with Star Trek always having been a family friendly universe at heart, some of the stuff they did in S1 felt incredibly out of place. Now, I enjoy Discovery going a somewhat darker route at times, as did my favourite Star Trek show DS9, but there's got to be a limit!
- Giving names and characters to the bridge crew!!! Well, I guess they did have names in the first season, too, but I think we can all admit that nobody remembered those, right? Of course the characterisation of the bridge crew members is still a far cry away from the classical Star Trek approach of having all of them be main characters, but at least they're not glorified extras any more. More or less at least. Plus, I bet I wasn't the only one who
Also, I'm thrilled by all the new stuff they added!
- Captain Pike is awesome! Seriously! Once more I'm super glad that Inhumans was cancelled, so Anson Mount could be available for this role. Pretty damn sure he's gonna be dead by the end of the season, though, because there's no way that someone that nice and cool and competent could possibly last longer than one season, I'm afraid. (I'm having a feeling that the Captain's seat might be Discovery's "Defence Against the Dark Arts Teacher" position, with someone new filling it every year. )
- Section 31. Good guys with very shady morals and questionable behaviour. Sounds intriguing already. Plus a very good way to have Tyler and Georgiou still in the picture.
- I'm really enjoying the Red Angel arc so far. Very mysterious. Plus, coupled with last week's plot twist... Damn, I can't wait to see where this is going!
- Spock. Just... Spock. The actor does a superb job and I think his chemistry with Sonequa is incredible. I also want to give the writers a big fat hug every time those two share a scene, or rather, a verbal fight with each other. They're probably the most logically minded and professional people on the ship, yet they also share a bond as siblings with each other while also having this painful history of Michael hurting Spock as a child. And to see how their exchanges are always such a seamless entanglement of all these aspects is a true delight imo.
Also, to answer Michael's (hilarious!) question: Yes, I do think the beard is working.
The one thing I guess I'm still a bit on the fence about would be where they're going with the AI arc. I just hope it turns out to be more than just the umpteenth Terminator rehash.
And, lastly, the only thing that I truly dislike this season on Discovery:
Tyler's beard. Dude, get a shave! And maybe a haircut, too, while you're at it, but most importantly a shave!
