Surprised this thread hasn't been started already. Anyone watching?
I was beyond a bit disappointed after the first two episodes this season, and just watched 3, 4, and 5. Still have #6 to get caught up by thursday, when 7 comes out.
I delayed after the first two episodes, because it seemed like it had reverted to the less-than-stellar first few episodes of s1, preoccupied by Seth's sometimes sophomoric locker-room humor. I guess I am just getting to old to find too much of that really funny.
However, e3 was slightly better. And e4 "Nothing Left On Earth Excepting Fishes" was quite good, much more in line with TOS in many ways. I had to pause and comment after e5 "All The World's a Birthday Cake", however. I really, really liked it. The whole idea of 'first contact', as well as a society based on astrological signs, was a refreshing new take on an old subject. I thought they did a great job with it.
Not to say that Sci-Fi has not dealt with astrology before... r.e. the remake of Battlestar Galactica. (which got a good bit wonky toward the end). I am sure there are others, I certainly have not seen all the shows out there. Just wanted to put in some praise for what I thought was a great episode.

Well, there were a couple of societies in Doctor Who that were ruled by astrologists, but I don't think there were any at the level of modern technology.
The second episode this season was the worst of the series to date. The third episode was really good with the clash of the Voyager and Enterprise doctors - on an interesting side note, John Billingsley just showed up on The Rookie playing another interesting character.
Looking forward to the new episode tonight, though the preview was really vague as to what it's about.

Yeah, agreed on the worst episode there. Also, enough with Bortus already! Sure, he's a good character and I enjoy the occasional plotline about him, but it seems that aside from maybe the Captain and not-Bobbi, he has seen by far the most focus these one and a half seasons! About time they put some of the other characters more into the spotlight now, too.

Well, I watched tonight's episode and though much better than episodes 1 and 2, it was rooted in Moclan culture again. I don't want to spoil anything at this point, but I'll go so far as to say I really wouldn't mind if Clyden were to never appear on screen again and just got the occasional mention in the dialog. Liking the new security chief a bit more.

I really like this show but it depends a fair amount on being in the right head space. It's a mix between a parody of sci-fi, actual sci-fi, political commentary, fan-fic Star Trek, parody of fan-fic, meta, musical, and so much more.
Sometimes it can feel like it doesn't know what it is but a minute later as a viewer you can sort of click into place and it suddenly makes sense again. Or you can stop watching an episode then try again later and totally "get" what they're going for.
I like how they explore the idea that not all planets are the same - i.e. if you took a crew of people from very different planets they would have issues adjusting to a common set of environmental settings (gravity etc.) It would be near impossible to be truly realistic in this sense, but at least they're addressing it in interesting ways.

Rediscovering this thread/board thanks to FreeKresge I will say that since my last comment above the show has found it's groove. Still a few elements from time to time of other genres, but clearly rooted in sci-fi now. And I'm loving it. I saw someone on twitter suggest they're doing a better job at being Star Trek than Star Trek, and while that might be a stretch it's not a huge one. Certainly this show is better than several of the various Trek projects that fell flat.

I watched, and enjoyed, the first season but haven't gotten back to it yet. Unlike AOS, they have a LARGE and vocal fanbase

My off-the-cuff take is that it took a while for them to figure out what they wanted to do. The first couple of seasons seemed like they were caught between doing a bit of a parody of sci-fi with some Family Guy humor and sometimes trying to do a politically charged topic with a more serious message. Season 3 for me seems like they've landed on the right balance. There's still some Seth humor mixed in but it's more sporadic. The show is much more about telling a story around some fascinating issues of politics, societal boundaries, morals and ethics.
