When Thor is told that Thanos is Gamora's father, why did Quill say "stepfather, actually"? I thought Thanos' people killed her mom too. Did he take her mom and marry her? Or did Quill just mean adopted father and said it incorrectly?

Quill just didn't get the specifics accurately. Thanos's "children" are probably not literally adopted either. I'm not sure there's a better term to use that would work in the scene. "Adopted father, actually" doesn't roll off the tongue the same way and "Not her real father but a guy who calls her his daughter even though he kidnapped her" is even worse.
I guess there's a 50/50 chance her mother was spared but there's zero indication she ever saw her again.
