I had heard it wasn't doing great and read some vague controversy over
I enjoyed it. Probably a 7 or 7.5 for me. There may have been one or two too many "oh so that's the origin of that huh?" bits, but some were well worth it IMO. Some great callbacks to the other films so it felt like it was part of the overall SW universe but still had it's own feel to a degree.
Alden Ehrenreich was very good (though not perfect) as young Han. Donald Glover was *amazing* as young Lando. Everyone else did a good job IMO with the new characters. Chewie was great in this too actually.
They left room for more stories after this one or they can leave it if they're focusing on Boba Fett or Obiwan as has been rumored.
More spoiler-y bits on the "controversy" referenced above:
What the heck is the big deal? I saw so much on social media about people being outraged over him being "pansexual". I didn't look for details and didn't even read up on what "pansexual" means exactly. I just assumed maybe he was hooking up with some alien or something and since I saw some jokes about Han thought maybe he hits on him or something. Then I see the film and I'm thinking "that's it?". He has feeling for a droid and they make a few suggestive comments. Who cares? Droids are sentient in SW and this one even had a nice strut - so what's not to like? And in the OT he's sort of _assumed_ to be a womanizer but if you see a bisexual hitting on the opposite sex you might assume they're straight. That's the observer's problem IMO. There's nothing about Lando's character in the OT that makes him being _only_ into human women essential. Just that he's a smooth talker that takes a shine to Leia. Being pan or bi or whatever doesn't change that at all. Heck the droid is even female.
And a small spoiler on the "origin of that" stuff:
Most were great. Seeing Lando's outfit from ROTJ was cool. All the backstory on the Falcon was awesome. But man, did I cringe when they did the bit about how he got the name "Solo".
Lando's sexual orientation
