He claimed that he destroyed half the universe's life because he wanted to save it. It's an excuse imo. If he wanted to save the universe from consuming all resources, with that glove he could have made the resources in exhaustible, basically lasting forever. Instead, he put a band aid on the issue of overpopulation by destroying half the universe's life force. It was an excuse so he commit universal genocide.

Well, it was either that, or: "I'm in love with the personification of Death and instead of bringing her flowers, I'm gonna murder half the universe for her." Personally, I think Marvel made the right choice here.

I think he basically got fixated on his 50% plan and never stopped to reconsider his options. i.e. when he was looking for a way to cull the universe and came across the gauntlet idea he never stopped and reevaluated.
And he's also mad of course.
