Short version:
We can't. Not yet, anyway. We actually don't have enough information.
Here's what we know:
AIDA, an android with a Darkhold derived quantum brain, developed a virtual world in which living subjects can be introduced believing it's real. In order for the subjects' subconscious to accept the virtual world as real, AIDA removed their biggest/strongest/most powerful regret from their memories.
Aida's intent was to put all of the top SHIELD agents in The Framework. Coulson, May, Mace, Fitz and Mack all had their memories mapped and are already in there living their new normal lives. We saw Coulson is apparently a teacher, Mack is home with Hope, Fitz is a rich dude (possibly with some new arm candy) and May is still a soldier for.... the biggest shocking twist of them all.... Hydra. Hydra HQ is the not destroyed Triskellion and Hydra appears to be the worlds intelligence organization of choice in lieu of SHIELD.......
Also worth mentioning: Agnes and Radcliffe are also in The Framework. Did they have a regret removed? Probably. Agnes probably had memories of brain tumor removed, but what, if any, regret did AIDA remove from Radcliffe's memory? Also of note: IRL Radcliffe and IRL Agnes are both dead and now only their consciousness live on within The Framework.
Add to that, the fact that Daisy and Jemma hacked their way in, without the aforementioned memory mapping, and are traipsing around the The Framework to search for, and rescue their friends. The first thing we see concerning the two trespassers is that Daisy is with her boyfriend and Jemma has a gravestone. Oh, did I mention that Daisy's boyfriend is played by Brett Dalton? WTF?
I spent a lot of time pondering all this, and read all your comments and here's some stuff that's tumbled around in my non-quantum brain:
At first I thought it would be cool if each individual had their own personal version of The Framework. Would make for some good Syfy, but would make it next to impossible for Daisy and Jemma to find and rescue them, and it would take way more than seven episodes to resolve and culminate this arc. Besides, we saw IRL May seemingly physically react to Agnes being placed in The Framework, so it's seems it's one virtual world in which all players have been placed (or placed themselves).
Now the questions:
We didn't see Mace. What's his virtual reality in The Framework?
Another interesting question is why is Fitz in the situation he's in within The Framework? Was his regret joining SHIELD? I just don't see that. He met Jemma at SHIELD and regretting joining SHIELD would remove her from his life. It may be possible that AIDA didn't understand that, though. And, of course, who's the arm candy?
Coulson teaching was already sort of explained when CoulBot told MayBot that he wondered what life would be like if he'd never joined SHIELD.
Mack's VR makes sense as we recently (conveniently) learned about Hope.
May being in Hydra, however, seems like a contradiction to what we previously saw in the second arc. The regret that was removed from May was killing the girl in Bahrain. How did that lead to her working for Hydra?
Now for the trespassers:
How could Ward be considered a paradise for Daisy? It would be easy to say that after AIDA removed Daisy's regret it would leave her life in a place where Ward would be part of her paradise, but...... Daisy was never mapped so AIDA wouldn't have known what her regret would be, nor what her paradise would be. Again, WTF?
Why is Jemma (supposedly) dead in The Framework? Whose paradise is that? Not mine, I can tell you that. Certainly not Jemma's. I thought it may be a fail-safe in case of an unauthorized intrusion, but then..... wouldn't that apply to Daisy as well? I wish the writers would leave Jemma the hell alone...... I mean, they all get their own personal bumps in the road, but Jemma seems to always get the extreme bumps.
Speaking of Hydra, where the hell did that paradise come from? Whose paradise is that? Is it due to Mace's regret removal? Was it intentionally put there by AIDA?
SHIELD/Hydra Tomato/Tomahto?
I find it hard to believe that Coulson's situation caused it, or May, Fitz or Mack either. It's either due to Mace or AIDA playing a sick joke. :-)
The biggest question(s) is/are:
How will Daisy and Jemma be able to rescue them? Will they even recognize Daisy and Jemma if/when they bump into them? If not, how will J/D earn their trust and convince them to leave? Can they convince them? If they do convince them to leave..... can they? Can they forego the VR and regain their real selves while hooked up to The Framework? May did it before, but supposedly AIDA and Radcliffe fixed that. Will Radcliffe and/or Agnes come into play and assist with the rescue? Will rescue have to come from outside The Framework, i.e. Yo-Yo taking out SuperiorBot and AIDA.
When they do come out of The Framework, will the experience have any long term affects? May's been in a long time. How is she physically? Mentally? Side note: I hope the writers do a better job with this than they did when she came back from the dead. She was pretty spry for a woman that just came back from the dead......
When the heroes are finally removed from The Framework, will SHIELD shut it down (essentially killing Holden and Agnes)? Will the show runners broach the subject of whether or not Holden and Agnes have any legal rights? Personally, I think Agnes deserves her paradise, but Holden needs to find out what paradise he can find in a VR maximum security prison...... Let him virtually reap what he sowed in the real world. :-)
Someone on here mentioned Yo-Yo and Piper are going to need help. I agree. Joey would be great for this. He could turn AIDA and AnotonBot each into a slinky........ (oooh, could you imagine a sentient sliky? Bwaahaahaa)
Also, concerning the real world, I wonder if all the LMDs are indeed gone (as the EPs have hinted at) and how much of The Playground remains intact. If The Playground is toast, where will they work out of next season?
Is it April 4th, yet?
