I'm sorry if this subject has been brought up elsewhere but, was Elena's decision to kill Ruby the same as Coulson's decision to kill Ward?
Both were borne out of revenge (one more than the other), both were premeditated, both had the victim not be an *immediate* threat, both had justified reasons as well as unjustified reasons, and both, it could be argued, were done by people who were *not* in their right mind.
What do you think?

When Coulson killed Ward, one could make a case that S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra were at war, so that, for a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, a Hydra leader would be a legitimate target. In fact, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who just happened to be Coulson, sent Hunter on a mission to assassinate Ward earlier that season, before Ward killed Rosalind Price. It is plausible that Coulson had the authority to assassinate Hydra members, or at least leaders, so he was just doing what Hunter failed to do.
In the last episode, May told Elena to go to the Zephyr. Elena disobeyed. Daisy told Elena to leave. Elena again disobeyed. It is a safe assumption that Elena did not have the authority to take out Ruby.
On the other hand, while Ruby was not threatening anyone at the particular moment when Elena offed her, Ruby was both powerful and volatile and could easily have become a threat without warning, whereas Ward was wounded and was less likely to become a threat than Ruby was.

I agree with you about Elena but not about Coulson. He handed over the Directorship over so that he could literally track down Ward because he knew that he would do stuff that a Director shouldn't. That was complete pre medititation. Also, they were on an alien planet and he could have left Ward there.
