Just finished watching this movie and I'm sure once I wrap my brain around it I'll have much more to say. I absolutely loved it! Definitely a "go into this movie prepared to be forced to think!" film. Very well acted and quite interesting plot. It reminded me a bit of Contact, which I also enjoyed (the book more than the movie-- the movie took quite a few liberties.) I can definitely see why it's receiving accolades.

That was really quite the "whoa!" moment at the end there, that part was brilliant! - SLIGHT SPOILER AHEAD - The one part that really pissed me off, though, was when they had that session with the heptapods where they said something about "offering a weapon". Like, did nobody think to ask what that meant right there in the moment? Did they really all have to pull out, have an emergency briefing where the main characters then decided to rush back in, only to ask for clarification?! So much drama could have been avoided if they had just been sensible here. All in all I felt that 99% of the script was really great, but this one moment felt so stupid to me that it pulled me right out of the movie.

Yes, I agree that took me out of the movie, too. I would also hope in that situation that the people in charge would not rush to judgement, especially when their expert is telling them "This is just a loose translation and they may mean something a little different, like tool or technology. It could be completely innocuous. They may just want to share tech." It was definitely done solely for plot. But other than that, I thought it was brilliant!

To me, the most memorable part of Arrival was just before they entered the spacecraft for the first time. The characters received something ( an injection if I remember correctly) that would have a side effect of ringing in the ears. As they were driven to the spacecraft, we could hear this eerie screech, screech, screech, which really contributed to the sense of anxiety.
A few of us in the theater noticed a (dim) flashing light as well. This was also a bit eerie as it did not seem to originate from either the projection booth or the screen. Just before they entered the spacecraft, one of the theater staff entered and told us that the fire alarm went off (false alarm). However, since we were just told that the characters would experience a ringing in the ears, nobody realized that it was not from the film. They replayed the scene again, without the alarm. I think it was better the first time.
Arrival did win the Academy Award for Sound Edition. I wonder if any voters were in the theater with me.

I'm probably going to be watching this one today. I hope it's better than Contact though. That's the one with Jodie Foster, right? If I recall, I found that one quite boring. It's been a while though, so I could be wrong.
