A couple of years late, I know, but I finally started watching Spartacus a while back and after having watched the first season and the mini-series Gods of the Arena so far, I'm now going into the second regular season. That's the one where Liam McIntyre takes over from Andy Whitfield, who had sadly already passed away at this point. It must have been a horrible situation for everyone involved, but I thought they handled the transition, as well as the addition of mini-series in between very well. Anyway, I'm really enjoying the show and decided to make a thread about it, mostly in honour of the countless actors and actresses who later on made their way into sci-fi/superhero TV. I'm sure I'm gonna forget a few: - Manu Bennett (Crixus): Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke - Arrow - Lucy Lawless (Lucretia): Isabelle 'Izzy' Hartley - Agents of SHIELD (D'uh!) - John Hannah (Batiatus): Dr. Radcliffe - Agents of SHIELD - Liam McIntyre (Spartacus #2): Weather Wizard - The Flash - Nick E. Tarabay (Ashur): Cotyar - The Expanse / Captain Boomerang - Arrow - Lesley-Ann Brandt (Naevia #1): Mazekin - Lucifer (Damn it, I didn't even know they had re-cast her yet! - Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Naevia #2): Amanda Waller - Arrow - Katrina Law (Mira): Nyssa al Ghul - Arrow - Peter Mensah (Doctore): Well, what do you know, he's gonna appear on AoS in two weeks!! - Simon Merrells (Marcus Crassus): The Founder - The Tomorrow People / Julian - Dominion - Jai Courtney (Varro): Captain Boomerang - Suicide Squad / Kyle Reese - Terminator Genisys - Eka Darville (Pietros): Malcolm - Jessica Jones - Daniel Feuerriegel (Agron): Spud (Episode A Wanted (In)Human) - Agents of Shield Totally forgot: On the writing and producing front: Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, starting with Gods of the Arena! Well, looks like Arrow's got the numbers here!

I thought this was a really well-done series. I watched it during its original run. I must say, I wasn't really expecting much. This is not my typical genre. However, I was really impressed with the acting and the plot.

However, I was really impressed with the acting and the plot. Yeah, the show turned out way better than I had originally anticipated. I think many viewers just stuck around for the sex and violence stuff, but I was more intrigued by the ongoing plot and characters. Honestly, I just finished watching the finale and I was bawling at the end! I mean, I had anticipated most of it, given the course of RL history, and still... Ganicus dying broke my heart the most, I must say. Agron and Nasir surviving way great, and yet, the one character I had really wished for all the time to make it was Ganicus. One of the characters I actually cared for for a while was Ashur, probably in large parts because I really like the actor. Yeah, sure, he was always kind of an a-hole, even in the first season, but the Gods of the Arena prequel proved that a lot of the resentments cast at him were caused by things outside his control. I think he even reminded me of Ward in some regards, but as he turned into a full-fledged villain in season 2 - again reminiscent of Ward, I guess - my sympathies quickly vanished accordingly. Once again, though, I can only give highest praise to all the actors invoved (yes, even to Jai Courtney! ) on the amazing job they did. Next to the gladiators I also always enjoyed the Roman characters, from Batiatus and Lucretia to Illythia and especially Marcus Crassus in the final season. Special mention to Ceasar as well, and all the additional characters in that arc, but the actor playing Crassus really outshone pretty much every antagonist this show had ever put in Spartacus' path. So, all in all an amzing show that could have scraped by on fanservice alone, but really outdid itself with an amazing story and the characters and actors to carry it! Oh, and to add to the list in my innitial post, as to names which in the last years have joined the ever growing list of comic and sci-fi shows, I shamefully ommited AoS's very own Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, who joined Spartacus during Gods of the Arena as producers and also writers repeatedly! And, on a more personal note, I also want to mention my repeated happiness at seeing Michael Hurst credited as producer and especially director on several (and many of my favourite!) episodes. Anyone who - like me - used to watch Hercules back in the day might remember him as Hercules' best friend Iolaus, who was also one of my first major TV crushes! It really made me happy to see he's still active in the business, even if only behind the camera these days. And, as a last point, regarding the fact that the finale had moved me to tears, nothing was probably worse than seeing all the characters from the entire show one last time and then Andy Whitfield having the final moment. What a loss.

Yes, I felt that way about the finale, too. I mean, I knew the history so I knew certain characters wouldn't make it. Honestly, with as violently as Rome put down that rebellion, I didn't expect many to survive. I was also glad Agron and Nassir did survive, along with Laeta and Sybil. I knew Spartacus wouldn't make it. I really was also hoping that Gannicus would, though.

And another addition to the list: Daniel Feuerriegel (Agron) actually guest-starred on Agents of Shield already in the episode A Wanted (In)Human. He played Hunter's "buddy" Spud, who challenged him in Hydra's stupid fight club.

Just a small tribute to my favourite character on the show:

Damn, I just recently found out that there had been the idea for a Julius Caesar spin-off floating around back in the day when Spartacus ended. Now THAT is a show I would have loved to see! Apparently Starz decided to put their money on the pirate track instead and made Black Sails, which I utterly adore, but why not both?? Both would have been good!

I remember talk of that when Spartacus was ending its last season. I do wish they had been able to work that out! Caesar was an excellent antagonist. It would have been interesting to see their take on his rise to power.
