I hate delivering this news. comicbook.com/marvel/2018/02/27/agents-of-shield-finale/ 'Agents of SHIELD' Season 5 Finale Could Serve as a Series Finale By JAMIE LOVETT - February 27, 2018 Is this the final season for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD? If that ends up being the case, the series’ showrunners say they’re ready. That’s not to say that they’re not hoping for a season six renewal, but Jed Whedon and Maurisa Tancharoen tell TVLine that they’re writing the season five finale with the thought that it may actually be the show’s series finale very much in mind. “We are in process [of writing the finale],” Whedon said on Saturday the show’s Episode 100 celebration. Tancharoen added, “We know what it is.” That is, they know what the finale’s story will be, and it could be used to end the season or the show entirely. “Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end,” Whedon said. “We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way. " We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.” Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is currently in a tough position. It holds a late Friday night time slot and its average 2.3 million viewers the smallest audience of any ABC drama. It's average 0.6 rating in the key demographic is the network’s second lowest next to Once Upon a Time, which is in its final season. However, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD sees a 117 percent demographic bump when Live+7 DVR numbers are taken into account, which is the fourth-largest increase in all of network television. It's unclear how much ABC values the delayed viewing numbers, but ABC head Channing Dungey said at the TCA press tour that she is “cautiously optimistic” about SHIELD’s chances at a sixth season.

This is good news. If there's any doubt in ABC being smart enough to give us another season at least we'll be left with some closure. And that would also mean that any spin-offs or other projects would have an easier time following it.
I hope we get another season of course, but knowing that they're planning it in a way that allows for it to be a series finale makes me feel better about the worst case scenario at least.

It's the only reasonable thing to do, really. Better to prepare for the worst and be renewed, than to write a season finale like they did for season 4 and then leave people hanging.

Nah, watch them kill Coulson in the finale, get renewed, and then have to go, "Uh, now what?" when it comes to write season 6.

I’m going to stay cautiously optimistic about it. I definitely would rather them plan for the worst and not get cancelled than the other way round. I’ve experienced being told at a con that a beloved show was renewed for S4 AND 5 only to be told, “Yeah, about that...” when 4 was left on a major cliffhanger. (Lookin’ at *you*, stupid Sy Fy and your handling of FarScape).

I *hate* that we go through this EVERY SEASON.

I think it's also worth it to keep in mind that AoS is a bit different beast than other series, due to its relationship with Disney and Marvel. Those are some pretty big guns to have in our corner, especially if Disney/Marvel feel it's in their interest for AoS to continue to air. I'm sure there is quite a bit of additional backroom wheeling and dealing that happens with AoS that other shows without those connections don't get.

Seriously, with the LMD technology already out in the open, this wouldn't even be a problem to begin with. They'd just go with Robo-Coulson for a while until Ghostrider quickly pops into the afterlife to retrieve the real Coulson and we're back on track.

In that case, I'm posting the very first song for season 6, dedicated to Coulson:

No, I've never watched Buffy because my brain has to yet to see it and be like, "New Obsession!" And that's the only way I watch new and different TV shows. It's why I watch AoS almost exclusively unless I happen to be in the mood for a different show (that has most likely been a previous obsession). I find new obsessions by watching things with people I'm already obsessed with. Sometimes I wish I was normal.
