Last night, I got into a deep conversation with three other people on Twitter after I Tweeted that this whole hypothetical "Coulson is dying" thing is hypothetically making people who aren't exactly fans of Phil Coulson, show support and realize the importance of his character to the show.
The conversation touched many topics ranging from season 3 to TAHITI to stuff that may or may not be happening now.
Anyway, it made me realize I have a need to hear from other people about their own opinions/problems/likes/dislikes of Philip J. Coulson.
So how do *you* feel about the man? 'Cause by now you all know how *I* feel about him.

I think you missed the point of this thread... Not sure what you're looking for, but here's my assessment of Coulson. (Because I really don't feel like doing the thing I should be doing. ) The only reason I tuned into AoS was because of Agent Phil Coulson. He (and Fury) were the faces that appeared in all the movies (but one, because Hulk wasn't a SHIELD operation), that said all these movies existed in the same reality. It was like Oliver Douglas going to Sam Drucker's general store and Kate Bradley showing up at the Clampett's. It was cool. I wanted to see how they brought Coulson back to life, just because he was a favorite character in the movies. I was probably expecting CSI SHIELD. I didn't expect it to be a story that evolved into a good part of the first three seasons in a really unique way. Phil Coulson in AoS is not the same Phil Coulson in the movies (explained away mostly in S1), but the characteristic he retains, is he is a leader and a decision maker. He knows what is right and what's wrong for the mission, even if those don't equate to good and bad. Even in the Framework, he knew something was wrong, unlike May, Fitz or Mack. It's been shown the others can survive and operate on their own and in groups, but when the Team is together, they all follow Coulson's lead. He is not irreplaceable, but I think the effectiveness of the team would suffer if he's gone, if the team survives at all. If he was the "glue" in the movies, he is certainly the glue that holds the team together. I think we even see that in 2022. As for the show, the chances of Phillip Coulson being written out of the show is zero. Even if he makes a movie appearance, he is probably more valuable to Disney exactly where he is. The MCU is getting to be a crowded place for someone without superhero capabilities. Then again, I could imagine "Agent Phillip Coulson: Ghostrider." I'd go see that movie. They could do it in a three episode arc, too...

I am a fan of the show primarily because of the characters and the actors who play them. Coulson is not my favorite character on the show, that would be Fitz and Simmons, but he is on the next tier. As I noted in a thread in which we ranked actors, this show exists because Clark Gregg was able to make a minor character from Iron Man memorable. I appreciate that. I like Coulson best when he is able to balance his head and his heart. He is able to do what is needed to be done but, unlike Nick Fury, Coulson does not believe in acceptable losses. I also like the way that he is able to inspire loyalty and keep his team together. I like him the least when he lets his emotions control him. One problem when he lets his emotions take full control is that he puts the needs of the few over the needs of the many, especially if the few is named "Skye" or "Daisy Johnson." For example, the Guesthouse raid may be one of the most heinous acts committed by a good character on the show. Also, Clark Gregg tends to overact in these situations. I went into more detail in the thread on The Characters' Personalities: The Good And The Bad.

I've had this conversation with Beren, and I'm starting to think some people feel that way about his acting because he came from theater more than anything in front of a camera.

I don't think I could express myself better than FreeKresge did. He sums it up nicely. Favorite characters for me would have to be May and Daisy, with F/S coming in second in a very close race. Could even be May, Fitz, Daisy, then Jemma..or whatever

Does Clark over-act or is he directed that way? I've had this conversation with Beren, and I'm starting to think some people feel that way about his acting because he came from theater more than anything in front of a camera. I feel that his natural tendency to use super-dry humor, ala Bob Newhart, carries over from his persona to the character. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it is kind of in-your-face obvious. (I still have a head canon that he was instrumental in adding more 'blue soap' jokes in s4, for example). Whether he is directed to be that way, or if they styled the character in part around his nature, I couldn't say.
