Hypothetically, let's say Coulson *was* dying. When would he have figured it out? Surely he wouldn't have known before he was in the FW and surely he would've known before his deal with GR. I don't think he would've known before the FW because he was getting emotionally ready to be with May. Then after the FW, he would've essentially severed those emotional ties with her to spare her the pain of losing him. We do know for a fact that he would have known by 5x03 because of that talk he had with May in the Trawler. This is all hypothetical, of course.

If he did think this way (the part in bold), then I have an issue with that. I mean, it's an annoying trope used way too often in TV/movies IMHO. If someone is a very good friend with potential for more, staying just friends (or pushing them away) isn't going to make their death any less painful for you or vice versa... Nor will just staying away from them in either of those scenarios. In all likelihood, it will probably make it hurt even more due to the what might have beens.

Well, it's been established that sometimes Coulson doesn't do so well in the 'other people's feelings' department. And there's also the fact that May losing Andrew would have been a recent memory at that time. Maybe Coulson saw it as sparing her and didn't want to double down on her loss? Let's face it, his people and relationship skills have seriously degraded with time.

Some (granted not a lot) of time has gone by, and sparks were already starting to fly between Coulson and May, before he knew he was dealing with an LMD.

You're right, but there's a difference between being with May and in perfect health, and being with May in poor health knowing that she's going to lose you, just like she recently lost another person that she loved deeply.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll just add to this one:
What lines of dialog or scenes do you think foreshadowed the theorhetical fact that he was theorhetically dying?
I just remembered this conversation:
ENOCH: "Patience is a Chromicon's greatest tool."
COULSON: "And for those off us with a limited lifespan?"
