So I finally got the chance to watch it and this is effing ridiculous:
There's absolutely no justification for that rating and so called professional reviewers should be ashamed of themselves.
Now the audience scores are a bit more in line with my thinking.
Rottentomatoes: 76%
IMDb: 68%
76% is probably a little high IMO. 68% is more in line with my assessment as I was figuring a solid 7 (and I usually rate high).
To be sure, the series was...... lacking. But, it in no way sucked. The writing suffered at times and the direction was sub-par; but, the overall production was good. In my opinion, the story should have focused more on telling the story of Iron Fist, than on Danny Rand, i.e. too much Danny, not enough Fist (well, Kun-Lun actually). The story of the Fist is more important than Danny Rand's, especially since we've all seen that story before (twice) in the DC universe. To me it seemed 60/40 Danny and it should have been 60/40 Fist; and, not necessarily for action and fight scenes, but for a better telling of the story of Kun-Lun and the history of the Fist.
Fin Jones probably was not the best choice for the role, but he did okay; much better than he was panned for. Oh, and those that killed this show before it aired with their negative reviews because they cast a white actor in a white role need to be taken out back to the wood shed and beat within an inch of their lives. Jones' martial arts need improvement and I hear he's been training his butt off so we should see improvement in that area in S2. I'll be starting The Defenders soon and will be looking for improvement there, too.
Jessica Henwick was gold and Rosario Dawson always kills it on these shows.
Joy and Ward were Meh, but Harold was a trip.
Madame Gao was..... well it was different outing for her. She was quite a bit different here than she was in DD when dealing with Fisk and I quite enjoyed it.
Overall, I enjoyed it and rank it fourth of the four Netflix series I've watched. Like I said, I give it a solid(ish) 7, and that ain't bad.
Looking forward to The Defenders and IF S2 to see how the series and title character evolve.
