Lol, so five episodes of the show have already been released and still no-one updated this threat? I guess nobody got their HBO subcription updated, after all.
I got to say that I took a few weeks to finally start watching the show, because idiots on the internet had made me wary of it, making it sound like some SJW BS. Which it's not! Rather it's a show which proves that you can have a strong female lead and deal with racial issues without shoving an agenda down people's throats. In fact, they also spend an astounding amount of time showing how things can go wrong when liberal ideas go too far!
I don't really want to go into the show's plot, because a) I don't want to spoil anything and b) it's hella confusing! In a good way, though.
So instead, just a few words on the setting and the general premise of the show: Watchmen is set in present day Tulsa, Oklahoma, 34 years after the events of the graphic novel. So, yes, they follow the comic, not the movie, big finale and all. Another backdrop for the show is the Tulsa 1921 race riot, which is actually the opening scene. As a non-American let me just say here: I thought that was fake! I thought that was just part of Watchmen's fable for alternative history, but holy sh*t, that actually happened!!
Anyway, the show focuses on a couple of characters within the Tulsa police as well as a few outside characters in a world that alternates somewhere between utopia and nightmare. Also, they certainly don't rush to explain things, so you really just have to go with the flow here. There's an immediate case to investigate, as well as a larger "conspiracy" that only becomes apparent as the show progresses.
I'm just now watching the newest episode. I did notice right away they gave a "strobe light effect warning", so that must be pretty intense. I also love the use of color to show past and present.
Yeah, as far as the 1921 Tulsa riots, that was far from the only incident of that type to occur.
As I said, the show is really confusing at times, but I don't mind that. They keep throwing words and concepts at you, which are clearly deeply significant to the world the show is set in, yet without bothering to explain those until several eps later. If that is something that annoys you, Watchmen is definitely not the right show for you.
One thing I really cannot judge, is how or if the show works for people who have never read the comic or watched the movie. Because while this is a new story that takes place decades later, the plot of the oiginal Watchmen is still highly significant. Those events still shape the world and some of the old characters show up on the show. They do explain some of those things eventually, but I don't think I would get many significant aspects without the real background knowledge.
Anyway, Watchmen is a very cool show that I can absolutely recommed. And also, Sister Night is dope!
