Okay so lots not to like about Inhumans. I don't consider it "bad" but a huge missed opportunity overall with a ton of minor missed opportunities within. For reference, I think Gotham is "bad" though ironically it also has some great elements that taken individually are better than anything in Inhumans. Gotham for me nets out at "meh" as does Inhumans but Inhumans has less extremes. Nothing that I found cringe-worthy but nothing that made me pump my fist either.
Thank God it was 8 episodes. Any longer and I may have had to tap out.
Lockjaw was great. Crystal's character was well done (outside of the cliched episode where she falls for a Earth boy - then forgets about him). Auran was fairly well done though the loyalty issue was all over the map without really capturing the internal conflict she should have been going through. Triton was kind of badass but not sure I could get used to the makeup/effects.
Medusa had her moments but most of the time I was wondering how she ended up as queen. She was rarely regal, or even likable. She didn't seem very smart most of the time either. Gorgon was a complete moron, even before becoming Gorgon-stein. It's one thing to have a character be less cerebral or emotional or something, but he wasn't even that smart of a strategist or fighter. Just a brawler that Hulk could probably beat at checkers. And Karnak? I don't even care that they changed his power but he bangs his head and suddenly is useless for just about anything except seemingly getting laid well out of his league? WTF? Spend an episode maybe on him having to recover but the fact that he never got his (altered) power fully back was lame IMO.
Black Bolt is supposed to be one of the smartest people on Earth is he not? Member of the Illuminati so on par with Stark, T'Challa and (c'mon Marvel get the rights back) Reed Richards. But here he's played as a bumbling "weapon" that falls ass-backwards into the throne and never really shows he deserves it or even respects it. I kept waiting for him to reveal something to show he has a plan or that there's some other elements at play to explain away him seeming so oblivious. The "weapon" excuse doesn't begin to cut it for me. The lower caste seemed legitimately mistreated and ignored for no reason. Nobody seemed like they saw Black Bolt as their king in the usual sense, even the royals seemed almost reluctant to follow him without question. The fact that so many Inhumans died during these 8 episodes - including many of the royal guard who were basically slaughtered like Ultron-bots without a moment of regret? Ugh. If they wanted to do a coming-of-age story or something similar to Thor learning what it means to rule/lead then why is Black Bolt 40 (or whatever)? He's been king for how long? 20 years? Even if it's supposed to be 10 I mean, does he not learn anything ever? How did he let his people come to this? It wasn't Maximus with some amazingly clever and deceptive plan. Maximus bungled almost as much as his brother did.
Lastly from me: no surprises at all? Just a "boss" and a "threat"? C'mon. Give us something more than that. I'm not one that needs to see crossovers or cameos all the time but at least give us something. Heck we don't even know where this place is they ended up. If they had shown what the big threat is that might have salvaged a little bit of the Black Bolt problem. If they had at least hinted who the boss is it would give us something. They didn't need to go full Nick Fury cameo but something??
Maybe future stories (if we get any) can address some of this, but all-in-all they really whiffed here. So much potential, so little to be excited about.
