But that's still saying a lot....
Considering the huge IMAX deal for a TV series pilot....... this should have knocked me on my ass; but sadly, it didn't. Like I said it doesn't suck, but it didn't meet my (already low) expectations either. I'd be even more disappointed if I'd have paid the money to see the pilot in IMAX.
How do you save money after blowing the budget to have two new IMAX cameras invented for your show? Cut off Medusa's hair in the pilot to save on (underwhelming) CGI. WTF? Medusa without her hair is just an under performing actress in a relatively bland role.
I think showing police brutality like they did is a bad idea considering all that's been going on in the US lately. Thank God Anson Mount isn't black or Hollywood would be receiving death threats. IMO it was bad timing of a bad idea. I guess they did it to support Maximus' argument of the humans hatred towards Inhumans, but they could have left it out and still made their point another way.
Who are we supposed to root for? The Royal Family that subjugates their people to a life of hard labor? The whacko that wants to overthrow them? The citizens of Atilan that live like slaves? The humans protecting their xenophobia? Lockjaw? Right now, I'm rooting for Lockjaw.
Yeah, I'm being a little over-the-top here but, I've come to expect more from Marvel. IMAX intro of a TV show about major comic book characters WITH SUPER POWERS, produced by Marvel for ABC ..... and the best thing I can say about the pilot right now is "it didn't suck?" Yeah, that says a lot.
Now that's not to say there's nothing good about the show, but right now my disappointment is keeping me from listing them.
I'll keep watching, hoping that they take advantage of the massive room for improvement that exists.
I give it an optimistic 6/10.

It doesn't suck is higher praise than I can give it after the first episode. However, I'll give it a couple more episodes to improve. Seriously, how does anyone on the moon resist putting their fist in the mouth of Minimus every time he opens it. The guy is majorly creepy, sounds whiny, and has some majorly bad looking facial hair. Also, all these people with major powers want to follow him with all the time he spends crying about not having powers? He makes Sheldon Cooper on TBBT look downright sociable. The police were absurd. Rodney King did come to mind. But beyond the brutality, they saw him using sign language in the station, there's no way they don't get someone who knows ASL (no, I don't know if it's supposed to be ASL within the show) to at least try to communicate with him. And given what they've seen him do there's no way he goes in with the general prison population, but I'm sure it will lead to the trope with other prisoners attacking him. And guess how shocked I'll be when one of the prisoners knows his sign language. Who to root for? Right now I'm going with the surfer dudes who made friends with Gorgon. They're completely cool with his being inhuman and just generally being good people. I am wondering if Lockjaw will be explained later on or if the huge dog with teleportation abilities merely exists and we just accept it. I'll try to ignore the 1/6 gravity of the moon.

It was better than I expected (in terms of not boring me into a deep sleep), but it had a lot of problems. Some of the costumes weren't good. Medusa's wig looked only a little better than you'd find in a party store. Crystal's hair looked like someone took a can of black hair spray to it. Weird. I kind of like the Asian guy... Can't remember the character's name, but his ability is pretty awesome. Maximus is annoying af. Those surfer dudes were pretty chill about Gorgon being inhuman. It was also cool that they seemed willing to help him against Maximus' goons (had any shown). The girl who is Maximus' "partner"... You'd think the queen would have known her ability and that stabbing her wouldn't kill her (at least not permanently). Instead, she just leaves her lying there.

I had less problem with the not killing her permanently and more with taking the communicator to contact Bolt then putting it back so she could call for reinforcements. If Medusa wasn't going to keep it, she should have smashed it. Add to the list that from the moon they were able to find the girl with the cat eyes, but somehow they missed the entire community of Afterlife.

Well, we don't know whether Black Bolt knew about Afterlife and the Inhumans on earth prior to the fishoil incident or not. Seeing as they weren't actively being hunted by groups like the Watchdogs before new inhumans kept popping up everywhere, there wasn't really any reason to bring them to Attilan. Like Maximus said, their resources are scarce as it is. No point in bringing more people to the moon as long as they live (more or less) in peace on the planet. Now things have obviously changed, though, so it makes sense for Black Bolt to take action. Even though it does seem a little late at this point.

I'll admit that he's a horrible person (shaving Medusa was particularly cruel) but he obviously had the best intentions for his people, specifically for wanting to vanquish the Caste system. That Caste system really turned me against the Royal Family. If Black Bolt was so great, he'd have gotten rid of it.

It doesn't exist as a community anymore. Daisy and Coulson mentioned having to relocate everyone from Afterlife in season 3. Black Bolt and Medusa most likely knew about Afterlife when it was still a thing, but saw that the Inhumans there were in (relatively) good hands. It makes sense that they wouldn't feel the need to intervene if those Inhumans were safe, sound, and happy.

No need to intervene, but considering the resource problems they have on the moon it would have made sense to establish contact. The only reason not to establish contact with another known colony of Inhumans would be if Bolt & Medusa were willing to screw over their people in order to stay in power. I'm sure many of the moon colony would choose to relocate to Afterlife, especially those who didn't receive powers. The flipside is that if Bolt knew about Afterlife then Maximus probably would have found out and would have used that in his arguments for going to Earth.

You have a point about the resource problem but maybe they were afraid making any kind of contact could lead to Attilan being discovered by the regular humans.

Asian guy is Karnac Maximus' partner (Auran) is quite interesting. I think Max is an idiot, tho. He's soooooooo wanting to be with a royal babe, he's not paying attention the one powerful (and hot) woman on his side. He better watch out (woman scorned, and all that).

Probably my age, but every time I hear Karnac's name I'm hoping something will be said about getting the jar of envelopes from the porch of Funk&Wagnalls. Maximus was really creepy when he was trying to sway Medusa to be with him instead of Bolt. And yes, Auran is far more attractive than Medusa since you bring it up.
