Having my google-fu be at least a bit successful makes me happy.
Story: My 90 year old grandma has an upright freezer that she doesn't really want/need anymore (right now, all it has is a couple items in it from the tenants that rent out her basement apartment and they don't need it either). We could definitely use it seeing as our vegetable garden tends to produce quite a bit and we've run out of room in the upright freezer we already have in the garage, so we could use another. Well, my dad wants to compensate my grandma for the freezer (which she tries to say no need, but my dad insists, if for no other reason than to ensure that - since the freezer will no longer be part of 'the estate', then the money compensating for it can be, and we can avoid any potential future fights with my dad's siblings... not that they would fight... but better to try in advance to not be that type of family that fights over estate items and what not whenever the time comes that my grandma passes (which hopefully won't be for quite some time)). Anywho, so me and my sister were tasked to try and figure out what the freezer is worth, if nothing else, to figure out what the freezer originally cost (grandma can't remember what she paid for it or when she got it) and then we can figure any wear and tear based off of that original price (if we have to).
Well, it's not a model made anymore, and this morning my initial google-fu simply found what current freezer models of that rough cubic ft. size from that brand are worth. Which isn't a bad start - but the range was from about $800 to almost $1000, couldn't really narrow it down beyond that. Then lightning struck my brain this afternoon and I used the internet's Wayback Machine to see if the brand's website had any archived pages from years past that had that model on it. Sure enough, the oldest archived page for that brand has that model and so I found what this model cost (at least back in 2014, the model is at least 4 years older than that seeing as there are customer reviews on that archived page dating back to 2010). But yay for my google-fu. I is proud of myself (and have passed the information on to my dad)

It didn't suck dammit (I didn't really think it would). Visually stunning, but there's a bit of a snooze factor at times. Would definitely would watch the entire season if it weren't a streaming only show.
Oh, well............. on to things I can actually watch.
Argh!!
What makes me really happy right now is coming home after a long day and logging into Steam, only to find that they're having a sale on the Assassins' Creed series. AC Black Flag, here I come!!! Arrrrrrgggghhh!!!

My neighbors and their willingness to help makes me smile/happy.
My parents got a freeze dryer a couple weeks ago (don't know what a freeze dryer is? see here: harvestright.com/) as another item to help us preserve our produce from our garden for food storage and it's been sitting in the garage because they needed to figure out where in the basement to put it and then needed to get a handcart to help get it into the basement (big unwieldy box... kind of heavy). Well, yesterday after I got home from work, my dad and my sister went and rented a handcart and began the process of trying to get the box off of the little wheeled flat dolly it was on and onto the handcart. Dad quite quickly threw out his back - spasms, could barely move, could barely straighten up. So he's not going to help (rightly so, though I had to get my mom to come out and insist he not try to do anything else). I know (unfortunately) I don't have the upper body strength to really be able to help out much either. So my sister runs over to the neighbors across the street from us to see if their high school boy (who mows our lawn every week) - we'll call him "C" - is home and can help. He's home, and he has one of his friends with him. They come over and just get that box right onto the handcart, get it to the side door and to the basement steps and then just pick up the freeze dryer and carry it down to where it needs to go. C is all, "Oh yeah, if you guys ever need help lifting stuff please ask, we're always glad to help" Later, my dad (laying in his recliner) really wants to give something to the boys for helping out so my mom takes some money over and the money is refused despite insistence.
So yeah... good boys, good neighbors
(as for my dad, I did hear him get up with his alarm this morning (and he turned off the alarm - which is away from his bed - fairly quickly, so he was apparently able to get out of bed okay) just as I was leaving for work, so I believe his back is feeling better/just needed some rest)

While it's easiest to give, cash seems the easiest to turn down. If the kid was in college I'd say get him a case of beer, but being in high school maybe you could send a pizza his way.

Beer's a definite no (even if he were in college.... he's the same religion we are and...no alcohol). I think if anything we'll up his pay for mowing our yard.
Another thing that makes me happy: Taking a day off of work. I'm at work today and was just getting that feeling of needing (what I call) a "mental health day" so asked my manager if she has any objections to taking tomorrow off, she's okay with it, so yay 3 day weekend for me. I really should take more time off anyway (I don't take nearly enough... I have 178 hours of PTO available... well, 170 now that I've requested tomorrow). Should make that one of my goals for the year again. Take at least 1-2 days off every month

Usually not a fan of over bred animals, but Oh. My. God! This doggy is soooooo cute!!!!

Was reading the funnies from last Sunday's newspaper this morning, and this one made me laugh out loud, first thing in the morning, so I thought I'd share it with you all.

Jemma Simmons: Right? I always think the same thing when I see a movie that was adapted from source material but has been changed so much that it's unrecognizable.

ayanami: I gotta admit that "World War Z" is an incredibly cool name, but still, seems a bit pricey if you're just gonna ignore the whole rest of the novel.
Nov 24, 2024 23:10:42 GMT
ayanami: The book sounds really cool btw. It's about one guy 10 years after the zombie outbreak gathering different perspectives from a bunch of survivors, so you have like a dozen different stories/settings in the novel. Plus, the author is actually Mel Brooks'...
Nov 24, 2024 23:12:58 GMT
ayanami: ...son and apparently there's an audio book version of the novel featuring a bunch of Hollywood talents! (Gotta have connections in life! )
Nov 24, 2024 23:13:41 GMT
Jemma Simmons: What?! That's wild! I'll have to check into it!
Nov 24, 2024 23:14:18 GMT
Jemma Simmons: Sounds way more interesting than the movie, anyway!
Nov 24, 2024 23:14:32 GMT
Jemma Simmons: Oh, just FYI, next weekend is a holiday weekend here, so I won't be able to be around.
Nov 24, 2024 23:15:41 GMT
ayanami: Absolutely! Which makes it even more bewildering that they went with such a lame clichéd Hollywood story instead. Which, btw, is actually getting a sequel next year. Who'd have thunk it?!
Nov 24, 2024 23:17:08 GMT
ayanami: Ah, alright, thanks for the heads up.
Nov 24, 2024 23:18:07 GMT
Jemma Simmons: Yeah, that's something I've noticed lately too. Why the sudden need for sequels for 20-30 year old movies? Most of the time they're crap and I'd definitely rather see new material.
Nov 24, 2024 23:20:11 GMT
ayanami: I think I'm gotta call it a night now, though. I've got kind of an early morning coming up tomorrow and it's getting late over here.
Nov 24, 2024 23:20:18 GMT
Jemma Simmons: Alrighty! You have a good couple of weeks then! I'll be spending next weekend with some family I like and trying to avoid any remotely controversial conversations with others that I spend the rest of the year avoiding
Nov 24, 2024 23:21:10 GMT
ayanami: Tbf, World War Z is "only" from 2013, but yeah, I get your drift. Answer: Hollywood producers are all a bunch of chicken sh*ts, who only want to invest money into stuff with a recognisable name and a good track record, so only sequels, prequels and reboots
Nov 24, 2024 23:22:41 GMT
ayanami: From now until eternity!
Nov 24, 2024 23:22:53 GMT
Jemma Simmons: Heh, yeah that sounds about right!
Nov 24, 2024 23:23:16 GMT
Jemma Simmons: I will make an exception for the new Gladiator movie. I've heard it's actually pretty good!
Nov 24, 2024 23:23:33 GMT
ayanami: Yeah, I hope you have a fun few weeks and a nice family time. And don't choke on the turkey! I'll see you around, bosslady!
